Hello everyone, about a year ago I bought an IKEA Malm bed in the size 180x200 cm (71x79 inches). For the last couple of months or so, the bed has been squeaking loudly with every movement, especially when I turn to the left or right. I have already tried tightening the screws, but without much success. The squeaking mainly comes from the area of the bed sides and the central support. Does anyone know this issue with the Malm bed or have tips on how to effectively stop the persistent squeaking? I would prefer not to take the entire bed apart if there are easier solutions. Thanks in advance for your help!

Tighten the screws again, especially at the joints between the headboard and footboard. That is basically correct, but care should be taken not to overtighten the screws, as this can damage the wood threads.
For IKEA Malm beds, squeaking often occurs due to movement transfer between the individual components, especially around the side rails and center slats. A clean solution is to pad the contact points with felt pads or thin strips of leather or fabric to reduce friction.
Additionally, it should be checked whether all wood joints are properly tightened, especially the central support, which plays an important role in larger beds. Cleaning the wooden slats (removing dust and small wood chips) can also help.
Hello and thank you for your detailed description, PUGU62!
Regarding the topic "IKEA Malm bed squeaks a lot – what to do?" there are some practical tips I would like to share, as squeaking can have various causes.
First, I recommend carefully disassembling the entire bed and checking every screw and connection point closely. This may sound time-consuming but is often effective. Especially with IKEA Malm beds, the wooden joints can become slightly loose due to changes in humidity or age-related material fatigue.
Second, you can try placing thin strips of leather, felt, or special glide pads between the contact surfaces of the wooden parts. This reduces friction and thus effectively minimizes squeaking.
Third, I suggest treating the metal fastenings or the points where the spring slats sit with a suitable lubricant – but be careful not to apply oil on wood. Instead, use silicone spray or a solid wax that does not damage the wood.
It is also important to use the screws and fasteners recommended in the IKEA assembly manual, as some users have experienced that using different screws can unintentionally cause noise.
If you like, I can provide you with a step-by-step guide for taking apart and cleaning the joints. I hope these tips help you for now 🙂
