Hello everyone,

A brief background...
A few years ago, we were gifted a Malm bed measuring 160 x 220 cm (63 x 87 inches).
Now we have separated, and I ordered a 140 x 220 cm (55 x 87 inches) mattress for my new bed and would like to buy a MALM bed again.
I am aware that IKEA has discontinued the 220 cm (87 inches) length beds (for whatever reason), and they no longer manufacture MALM beds of that size, even by special order. The only reachable IKEA store in the Netherlands naturally has none in stock either. In my opinion, this rather customer-unfriendly business policy makes purchasing the MALM bed difficult.

... and now to the topic:
I have considered buying a standard 140 x 200 cm (55 x 79 inches) MALM bed and extending it.
My goal is to make the extension so skillfully done that it is barely noticeable.

Has anyone here had experience with bed extensions or even done one themselves?
Could anyone possibly share some tips? I would appreciate every response!
I feel like I have searched half the internet but found nothing.
Kind regards
Marv

Hello everyone,

I specifically signed up because of this thread. I have been a long-time IKEA customer and am currently frustrated by the limited selection of beds in extra-long sizes. I would probably pay double the price for the Malm if it were available in a 220cm (87 inch) length. That would still be cheaper than almost any other extra-long bed on the market.

Has anyone had experience with “extended” Malms? From what I can see, both the longitudinal rail and the reinforcements should be adjustable to 220cm (87 inches). So, basically, only the side rails would need to be lengthened. It makes you wonder what the problem is for the IKEA carpentry department…
In theory, you could also buy a second “small” Malm and then cut and splice its rails. However, I think the bending forces at the joint would be too high. Is it possible to get “replacement parts” from IKEA as well?

For many years, there were MALM and other beds in 220 cm (87 inches) -
production was discontinued some time ago due to lack of demand!

I know, unfortunately... I just don’t understand it. From what I’ve seen searching online, almost everyone over 1.90 meters (6 feet 3 inches) — and there are quite a lot of them — seems to have trouble finding a proper bed. Or they have to pay outrageous prices for one (I’d be happy to find a decent 220cm (87 inch) bed frame for under 800 euros (!!!)). IKEA should actually be flooded with customers wanting the extra-long Malm...

Apparently, not "enough."
IKEA relies on high volume — presumably, the demand from taller people is not sufficient for IKEA, and unfortunately, you are among those affected...
