Hello Ikea fans,

My bedroom is exactly 3m wide (ceiling height about 2.55m (8 feet 4 inches)).
I know many have issues with the height, but I don’t think that will be a problem for me.

However, the 3m (9 feet 10 inches) width of the room is causing me some headaches. I have already ordered everything and had it delivered. I probably should have read the instructions more carefully beforehand, but somehow you always overlook something.

According to the sliding door assembly instructions, 5cm (2 inches) of clearance on the side is needed. However, my room is exactly 3m (9 feet 10 inches) wide from baseboard to baseboard, just like the cabinets. I simply can’t make those 5cm (2 inches) fit. If I’m lucky, by removing the baseboards and positioning the cabinet flush to the right side, I might gain about 4cm (1.6 inches) of space. What confuses me is that sometimes the instructions say no clearance is necessary, and sometimes they do. It seems that only the 300cm (9 feet 10 inches) version must be hooked in from the side, but I don’t understand why that isn’t the case for the other versions.

Here are the instructions for the version I have:

https://www.ikea.com/de/de/assembly_instructions/pax-lyngdal-sliding-doors-300x236__AA-297088-5_pub.PDF

The need for clearance is mentioned on page 5.
I suspect the relevant part is on page 25 (step 28).

I’m reaching out to those of you who have already assembled the cabinet:
How realistic is the 5cm (2 inches) clearance requirement? Is there another way, for example first hanging the rear door and then attaching the front door over it? I don’t understand why the door absolutely needs to be hooked in from the side, or why the 5cm (2 inches) clearance is required. Could it be just for finger space?

If that’s the case, maybe less clearance would be enough. My baseboards are about 1.5–2.5cm (0.6–1 inch) thick each, which might give me about 4cm (1.6 inches) of extra space if I’m lucky. If I assemble the cabinet slightly rotated, I might gain a little more. But I won’t know exactly until the carcass is built and the baseboards removed.

Do you have any tricks? I have calculated that I cannot assemble the cabinet elsewhere and then turn it into place because it would require 307cm (10 feet 1 inch) diagonal clearance between corners.

Please, please help me—I’m really stressed out. Returning the doors is almost impossible for me. I would have to pay $60 for return shipping plus new shipping costs for new hinged doors. Also, my girlfriend really wants those sliding doors, so returning them is not really an option.
I’ve already spoken with customer support. The representative was polite but couldn’t really help me. That’s why I’m hoping for your creative ideas.

By the way, for example, in these instructions, the note about the required side clearance is missing:

I have no idea what’s different about this version that it doesn’t require clearance.

Since there was no response here, I just went ahead and tried it. There were no problems. No idea why the instructions say that 5cm (2 inches) of clearance on the side is required. Even the hotline insisted on it. But it was never actually needed. Strange.

Well, that works too.
