Hi there,

I have a question:

I’m about to buy a kitchen from IKEA. I have already had a kitchen planned by IKEA.

However, I’m not very experienced with the transport and assembly. In other words, I’m relying on IKEA and their service. The nearest IKEA is about 30km (18.5 miles) from my home.

What are your experiences with IKEA’s transport and assembly services? I’m mainly interested in whether it remains affordable in the end, or if it might be better to choose a local furniture store.

Does the delivery and assembly end up being too expensive? Should I consider transporting it myself instead? I’m worried about missing parts and having to make a second trip, which can be frustrating, right? ops:

Please share your experiences! I’m looking forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,

Hello,
so we had a kitchen measured, planned, and delivered!
You can find information on the IKEA website under "Kitchen," quite far down under "Do it yourself or..."
We handled everything by email because we didn't want to call the customer service number.
That worked out pretty well.
First, a company came to measure the room. It was a subcontractor. They took all the measurements. This cost 70 euros, which you get refunded when you purchase a kitchen.
You can skip this if you measure yourself, but we thought: if the guy measures incorrectly, it’s not our fault, and since we definitely wanted to buy a kitchen there, the 70 euros were not too expensive for us.
We had already sent an email describing roughly what we wanted for the kitchen— which cabinets, which fronts, and so on.
Then an online meeting was arranged. During this, we were connected by phone with a lady from IKEA and had to log into a website at the same time. She then used the kitchen planner to set everything up for us, we added more requests, discussed how to arrange everything, etc.
In the end, our kitchen was finalized virtually.
That was a really nice experience.
We then had 4 weeks to think it over, make further changes if needed, and confirm the order.
After about 3 weeks, we were sure we wanted this kitchen and placed the order.
Unfortunately, we were a bit unlucky with the delivery time. There were some delays due to technical problems, but well— I guess you can never be completely safe from that. IKEA did waive the 79-euro (about $85) delivery fee because of the delays, which I thought was very nice of them.
Yesterday, FINALLY, everything was delivered!!! *happy*
It was really easy. A large Hermes delivery van arrived right on time with two friendly men who carried everything inside and placed it exactly where I wanted. Of course, I helped unload a bit too, but I don’t think it was really necessary. The delivery guys even called half an hour beforehand to say they would arrive within 30 minutes, which I thought was great. I’ve never had that with other delivery companies!
Yesterday we started assembling right away. So far, everything has been quite simple. We have all the cabinet carcasses assembled and some are already fitted with drawers. Now we are considering whether to use the partial assembly service or not. A full assembly service would have been too expensive because the kitchen is very large and charged by meters (feet). We wanted to save on that.
With the partial assembly, a technician would come to screw the assembled carcasses together, align them, connect the appliances, and so on. But we’ll see— maybe we can still do that ourselves.
So far, I’m satisfied. The contact with IKEA was great, and the service as well. A few parts are apparently missing, but I don’t think that will be a big problem. From what I’ve experienced with IKEA so far, that will probably be handled smoothly. I’m confident about that!
So I can only recommend it. Everything went great except for the delivery time. And in terms of price, no one beats this. We visited 3 other kitchen stores, where we would have paid twice as much!
So (at least so far) I am very happy!

Best regards,
kadi

Good evening:

Firstly:
First, a company came out to measure the room. A subcontractor. He wrote everything down. It cost 70 euros, which you get refunded when you purchase a kitchen.

... From a purchase value of 1000 € (about 1100 USD) ...

Secondly:
You can also skip that if you measure yourself, but we thought: if the guy measures wrong, then it’s not our fault, and since we definitely wanted to buy a kitchen there anyway, the 70 euros were not too expensive for us.

True, trust is good, but checking is better. So always double-check the drawings. They make mistakes too. Just a “proforma.”

Thirdly:
Yesterday we started assembling right away. So far, everything has been very easy. We already have all the carcasses assembled and some already fitted with drawers. Now we’re considering whether to use the partial assembly service or not.

I didn’t know you could “book” assembly after delivery. Impressive. Great service from IKEA.

And last but not least:
...and no one beats the price on that. We visited three other kitchen stores, and we would have paid double there!!

@maverick: .. From a purchase value of €1000.00 (about $1070) onward ...
I guess when you buy a kitchen, you rarely spend less than that, unfortunately!

Regarding the partial assembly: that information is also on the IKEA website. You assemble the base cabinets yourself, then you have to notify them when you’re finished. After that, a technician comes out to complete the rest of the installation, connect everything, and make adjustments. It costs €239 (about $255) for 4 hours, and every additional hour costs €40 (about $43) extra.
I actually had €160 (about $170) in mind, but I can’t remember exactly where I got that figure!

And one more thing about the three parts that were missing from the kitchen delivery:
We were offered free delivery by freight, but that would have taken too long, so we picked them up ourselves at a furniture store. The kitchen home shopping representative also checked in advance if everything was in stock.
For picking them up ourselves, we were reimbursed the full travel costs plus received two vouchers for a meal with drinks at the IKEA restaurant!
I think that’s quite nice and I’m once again impressed by the service!!

kadi

Conclusion:

Buying a kitchen can be easy and affordable.
Why not have some fun and get a quote for a kitchen that looks similar to yours from another store? It would be interesting to see what the price would be there... And you might help others make their decision on where to buy their kitchen.
How others decide doesn’t matter at all.

Did you know you get a 25-year warranty on your kitchen? So, make sure to keep all the receipts with the individual items carefully...

We received two other quotes for similar kitchens, and both were almost twice as expensive. Those prices were considered lower offers. For example, I found the veneer boards in those offers to be of poor quality.

The only item we didn’t buy from IKEA was the countertop. We chose a solid beech wood glued board, which is also available at IKEA but would have been relatively expensive there due to our unusual dimensions. So, we organized that ourselves.

Regarding the warranty: thanks for the tip! I’m now filing the receipts extra carefully!
