Hello,
Yesterday, I purchased additional side panels and shelves with 50cm (20 inches) depth to expand my Ivar system. Previously, the cabinet – as is the case with my current shelving unit – was placed on a 50x83cm (20x33 inches) board and stored that way on the shelf. Now, I see in the instructions that you have to insert brackets into the side panels and screw the cabinet onto them. I have some questions about that:

On page 17 of the Ivar cabinet manual, there is a diagram I don’t understand: am I supposed to drill the holes above and below the cabinet bigger and then screw in a screw?

Unfortunately, while there is a small figure shown calling Ikea’s customer service in the illustration, the hotline doesn’t seem to understand my question. When I want product information, they just refer me to the website. So, I thought I’d ask here.

How stable are the new shelves with the plastic edging, based on your experience? At the store, I was told they are “just as strong as the old wooden shelves,” with the added benefit that I can no longer cut myself on the metal edge (of the rail you put on the dowels?). However, on the website, I read something about 25 to 50 kg (55 to 110 lbs) load capacity depending on the shelf. I can stand on the old 30cm (12 inches) shelves with my 125kg (275 lbs) body weight when reaching for something on top of the shelf. I guess I should avoid doing that on the new shelves? What are your experiences?

Thanks in advance!

P.S.: I got the annoying labels off really well with a ceramic hob scraper.

Hello, I have no experience with IVAR, so I can't comment on the shelves.
The screws on page 17 are meant to secure the shelf to the wall so it doesn't tip over when the doors are opened unloaded, or generally if someone climbs on the shelf.

Ah, so that’s the idea! Drilling all the way into the wall, through the shelf... Normally, instead of using those silly retaining straps, I drill through the shelf at the top and put a wall plug behind it. Of course, I can do that at cabinet height as well. Thanks.

Does anyone else have experience with these boards? I just stood on one foot on them, and when loaded, it made the sound of glue coming loose... I think I’ll put those boards with the new plastic strip in the old shelf on the top and use the old boards in the new shelf on the lower levels.

Or does anyone here have extra boards from the old ones?
