Hello,
I’m reaching out here hoping to find some creative minds who can give me some ideas 🙂
So far, I’ve furnished my shared apartment room quite cheaply and practically, using Expedit-style shelving units (4x4, 2x4, 2x2) along with a desk topper. Now I finally have the chance to get my own apartment, which I want to decorate a bit more nicely. However, I don’t want to just throw away my still very useful Expedit setup.
I’ve already browsed the internet and found some suggestions (for example, covering Expedit shelves with wooden panels). What bothers me most is the “boxy look” 😀 I would like to change that. I prefer more romantic, playful furniture styles, and I really like the shabby chic look. However, so far I haven’t come up with any good ideas on how to soften or change the plain, modern Expedit style.
Maybe someone here has some ideas 😀
Best regards,
Flocke

Hello,
although this post is a bit older, it might still be of interest:
Have you ever considered covering the edges with foam molding strips? The "pretend plaster moldings" can be painted in various colors, and there is a wide range of profiles and sizes available. They are also easy to install and affordable.
Alternatively, you can cut molding strips yourself from thin foam boards using either self-made or pre-purchased templates, then either paint them or cover them with fabric, wood, straw, or anything else you can think of. This creates a nice frame for the shelf.

Edit: After looking up “Shabby Chic,” I think the suggestion above is very good. The square shape of my cover, however, would not fit that style right out of the box, but you could, for example, use a file to create the necessary rounded edges. Also, you would probably choose white instead of black.
