Hello everyone,

I would like to better protect my IKEA Besta shelving unit in the living area from dust. Although the doors close, dust still seems to get inside from time to time, which is frustrating for sensitive devices and documents. Therefore, my question to the community:

What types of seals can I effectively install on the Besta doors to minimize dust entry?

It is important that the solution is not too complicated to install, does not damage the wood or surface, and also takes the appearance into consideration, since the unit is visible in the room.

Has anyone had experience with special rubber seals, brush seals, or other materials that are recommended for the IKEA Besta?

Thanks in advance for your tips and suggestions!

Good question.

The lifespan depends heavily on the material and the amount of stress. EPDM profiles and silicone seals are generally very durable, even with frequent opening and closing. However, the adhesive tape can lose its effectiveness over time, especially at higher temperatures or if the surface was not thoroughly cleaned.

For most typical users, a single installation lasts several years. If facades are opened more often, it can be helpful to inspect the seals annually and make small repairs if necessary.

UV resistance is also a factor, but this is usually irrelevant for indoor furniture like Besta.

I’m quite relaxed about it and use sealing strips from a good hardware store; they have lasted for years without any issues in my experience. The adhesion is surprisingly strong if you clean the surface beforehand. If over time a corner comes loose, just reattach it briefly or secure it with clear mounting adhesive—it’s quick and reliable.

This way, you can live worry-free and the dust tends to stay outside rather than inside.

That’s a very valid point. I have had seals installed for over 2 years now, and despite daily use, they show only minimal wear.

It is important not to put too much strain on the seals, so avoid slamming the doors, and clean them regularly. This helps the adhesive tape stay sticky for longer.

If there are issues, you can usually reorder the adhesive tape and reattach the seals without needing to replace them entirely.
