Nathanae5716 Feb 2021 18:37Hello everyone,
I am currently looking into replacing the handles on my IKEA BESTÅ cabinets because I no longer like the original handles and want to create a custom DIY look. My question is: which materials are best suited for DIY handle replacements on IKEA BESTÅ systems, considering stability, ease of working with the material, and an attractive appearance?
I am thinking about wood, metal, or plastic, but I am unsure about the advantages and disadvantages of these materials in terms of frequent use and load—especially regarding durability and ease of installation. Are there any special tips for attaching handles to the often thin cabinet fronts?
Thank you in advance for your experiences and recommendations!

I can understand why you want to replace your BESTÅ handles with DIY alternatives, as the original ones are often quite plain and don’t fit every style.
From my experience, wood offers a warm and very individual look, especially if you shape and sand the handles yourself. However, the wood needs to be well sealed, otherwise signs of wear will become visible fairly quickly, especially with frequent use.
Metal handles are more robust and durable but can be a bit more challenging to install because of their weight and mounting requirements, particularly on smaller fronts like those on BESTÅ. You also need to pay attention to the screw length to ensure the handle is securely fixed.
Plastic or acrylic handles look modern and are very lightweight, which makes mounting easier. However, their durability can be questionable, especially with heavy use.
For mounting, I’ve had good results with pre-drilled holes that you then carefully adjust as needed. If you don’t want to drill, self-adhesive options might be considered, but they usually aren’t as stable.
I hope this helps you find the right compromise. It’s definitely not easy since every household and taste is different.

I would like to provide a more detailed assessment regarding DIY handle replacement for IKEA BESTÅ, as the combination of material properties and installation requirements is crucial here.
First, the choice of material:
- Wood: Especially popular among DIY enthusiasts. Solid wood offers good stability but can expand or contract due to changes in humidity, potentially causing warping. A high-quality surface finish, such as clear varnish or hard oil, is important to keep the handles resistant to dirt and moisture. Additionally, wood is easy to work with and customize, for example with engravings or shape variations.
- Metal: Offers high durability and a modern look. Aluminum or stainless steel, in particular, are corrosion-resistant. Metal handles are usually heavier, so the mounting points on the BESTÅ front should be as stable as possible. Common screw lengths (around 30 mm (1.2 inches)) are often sufficient but should be checked to ensure they are not too long and do not damage the back panel.
- Plastic/Acrylic: Allows for lightweight and low-maintenance options. However, surface hardness can vary, which may make scratches more likely with heavy use. Mounting is uncomplicated due to the low weight.
Installation notes:
IKEA BESTÅ doors are typically made from a thin MDF or chipboard composite with a decorative foil finish. Therefore, the drill hole must be clean and free of tear-out; using a small-diameter drill bit with a clean chamfer is advisable. For heavy handles, securing with washers is a good idea to avoid damaging the material.
In summary:
- For durable, natural handles, wood with a proper surface finish is top choice.
- Metal provides robustness and a clear aesthetic.
- Plastic is better suited for decorative accents when durability is not the primary concern.
Those who value easy installation and a unique look can also experiment with metal or wood handle strips that are glued directly onto the front. These are quicker to install but only moderately load-bearing.
If there are any questions about precise drilling techniques or sourcing materials, I’m happy to help!
