Hello everyone, I am looking for effective ways to childproof an IKEA Besta system. Specifically, I am interested in measures to secure the furniture against tipping while also preventing access to hazardous items inside the cabinets. What products or DIY solutions have proven effective, especially regarding installation and everyday usability? Perhaps there are also recommendations on whether certain Besta versions should be avoided when you have young children at home. Thanks for your experiences and tips!

For DIY solutions, I recommend sturdy ball catches and washers if the floor is not perfectly level. This reduces the risk of tipping. Magnetic catches are actually the best choice, as they are barely noticeable and do not hinder use. It is important to regularly check that everything remains secure, as children usually use them intensively.

Another recommendation: Avoid using loose or removable handles, as small children can pull them off or swallow them. Alternatively, IKEA offers integrated handle profiles on some Bestå models, which are better suited for households with young children. It also helps to store dangerous items directly in higher compartments, which can be more easily fitted with safety locks.

Especially with Bestå, which is relatively lightweight, a solid wall attachment using metal brackets is recommended to withstand greater forces.

Exactly, I completely agree! At first, I was worried we might be overdoing it, but after our little one pulled quite roughly on the cabinet, we reinforced the mounting. Once installed, it really gives a sense of security. We’ve also had good experiences with magnetic child safety locks.

Best tips:
- Wall mounting with sturdy brackets
- Magnetic child safety locks for doors
- Childproof storage of hazardous items on high shelves

These three points cover the main sources of danger.

These handle profiles are indeed advantageous because they not only have no loose parts but also feature fewer sharp edges. This also reduces the risk of children removing the handles with tools. Additionally, they are more durable and require less maintenance compared to conventional handles.

This turns it more into a game – a small trick that helps prevent them from immediately shaking or pulling on the cabinet, making them more cautious at first.

Thanks for the tip, that sounds interesting! I’m considering installing magnetic locks first and observing how the children react before investing a lot of effort into a full locking system. I’m also curious about how this affects the everyday usability of the Bestå, for example, whether permanent locks interfere with daily use or if adults can easily bypass them?
