Hello everyone,

I have several IKEA Besta cabinets with drawers where the rollers and rails become somewhat stiff after a while. I want to properly lubricate the rails and rollers to restore smooth operation and prevent wear.

However, I'm not sure what the best approach is: Which oil or lubricant is most suitable for the metal rails and plastic rollers? How exactly should the lubricant be applied to avoid using too much and attracting dirt? Do the drawers need to be completely removed, or is it enough to pull them out partially?

Is there anything specific to watch out for since the rails on the Besta systems sometimes look quite delicate? I’d appreciate any tips, experiences, or advice from professionals on how to do this correctly so the drawers run smoothly again and the rollers last a long time. Thank you!

The topic of oiling IKEA Besta drawers can be clearly answered:

- Use a thin, heat-resistant lubricant oil, such as sewing machine oil or a special ball bearing oil. Avoid grease-based products, as these attract dust to the rails.
- Drawers should be fully removed from the cabinet to access all rollers and guide rails properly.
- Apply the oil sparingly to the roller bearings – a small amount is sufficient.
- Make sure no oil residue gets onto the wood or cabinet surface.
- Avoid spray oils that can drip and cause stains.

This will maintain proper function and significantly extend the lifespan of the roller mechanisms.

I would like to add some technical details and step-by-step instructions for lubricating the Besta rails and rollers:

First, it is important to know that IKEA Besta guide rails are usually made of steel with a zinc or chrome coating, while the rollers are typically made of high-quality plastic. Therefore, a lubricant should be compatible with metal and not damage the plastic rollers.

I recommend the following steps:

- Fully extend the drawers, remove them from the cabinet, and work on a stable surface.
- Cleaning: Before applying oil, be sure to remove dust and old residues, for example with a lint-free cloth and, if necessary, a mild cleaning agent (not aggressive!).
- Choice of lubricant: A thin liquid oil, such as synthetic machine oil or light mineral oil, is ideal.

- Application: Use a small brush or needle to apply oil to the axles of the rollers and into the guide groove of the rails.
- Remove excess oil with an absorbent cloth to prevent dust from sticking.

- Reassembly and test: After lubricating, reinsert the drawer and open and close it several times to distribute the oil.

- Repeat: Depending on usage, perform maintenance every 6–12 months.

One small tip: Avoid using WD-40 or similar penetrating oils, as these act more as cleaners than long-lasting lubricants and do not maintain smooth operation over time.

It is also important not to overload the Besta guide rail mechanism. If the drawer still operates with difficulty despite lubrication, checking the alignment or for damage to the rails may be advisable.

I can largely confirm the previous points and would like to add some practical tips:

- Avoid using grease, as it is often too thick and quickly attracts dust, especially on the delicate Besta rails.
- For a clean application, thin drops of oil on the tip of a pin or toothpick can be helpful. This way, you avoid applying too much.
- If you have issues with smooth operation, also check the rollers for damage or dirt, as these problems cannot be solved with oil alone.
- Additionally, a light silicone spray on the plastic parts can help if oil is not enough and does not drip.

What I often see is that many people only treat the drawer system from the outside without removing the drawer. This is not sufficient because the rollers and rails are inside.

Removing the drawer completely makes cleaning and maintenance much easier, safer, and more thorough.

I fully agree with that. I struggled for a long time with squeaky and sticky Besta drawers. Using the right lubricant and patiently removing and cleaning the rails thoroughly made a big difference.

Sometimes it can be a bit frustrating, and I understand anyone who tries to avoid it. But once you know how to do it, you’ll enjoy your drawers for a long time.

So: don’t get discouraged—a clean and well-lubricated drawer is a real pleasure when opening and closing! If you have any questions, feel free to ask—there are sure to be more tips here.
