Hello everyone, I recently bought the Ikea Besta shelving unit and now I’m a bit concerned about the risk of tipping. The unit is quite tall and is placed in a room where children often spend time. My question to you is: What is the best way to secure the Ikea Besta shelving unit against tipping, so it remains stable even under load or if it gets bumped? I would appreciate tips on how to attach it to the wall, which materials are suitable for this, and if you have any experience with specific safety systems. Additionally, I’m interested in any particular points to consider during installation to effectively eliminate the tipping hazard. Thanks in advance for your advice!

Securing furniture to prevent tipping is definitely a good idea, especially for tall pieces like the Ikea Besta. However, I wonder if the included mounting hardware is really sufficient. Ikea often provides brackets or metal straps that are anchored to the wall, but are these strong enough?

I would recommend not relying solely on the original fasteners, but adding extra security using appropriate heavy-duty wall plugs and high-quality screws. For example, if the wall is made of drywall, special anchors must be used; otherwise, nothing will hold.

Additionally, the load-bearing capacity should be carefully considered: if the Besta shelving unit is heavily loaded, it is even more important to select a robust and stable anchoring system, otherwise it can tip over despite the securing.

I attached the shelf to a solid wall using the included brackets and additionally used screws with anchors that better suit my wall. This helps prevent tipping.

Hi, to secure the Ikea Besta shelf effectively against tipping, I recommend the following approach:

- First, check the wall: Is it made of concrete, brick, or drywall? Choose the appropriate anchors depending on the material.
- The mounting hardware provided by Ikea is usually intended for solid walls. For drywall, make sure to use special cavity anchors.
- Attach the brackets supplied by Ikea to the top edges of the shelf for a secure hold.
- When drilling, take care to make straight holes so the screws fit properly and the shelf can be tightened firmly.
- Distribute the weight evenly not only at the bottom but also in the middle of the shelf to reduce the risk of tipping.

Avoid fixing the shelf only at the bottom or twisting the brackets, as this reduces stability. If unsure, it’s better to ask a friend with practical experience to help with the installation.

In summary: The main safety comes from attaching the shelf to the wall with suitable anchors. The Ikea brackets are useful, but selecting the right anchors makes all the difference.

Great topic! 😃 I secured our Besta in the same way: attached to the wall with strong screws and suitable anchors, plus additional floor anchors. This provides double safety and really gives you peace of mind when children are around. Just remember not to overload the shelving unit and to distribute the weight evenly! Good luck, you’ll manage it! 👍

I can definitely agree with that. I have two small children at home and was also uncertain about the Besta shelving unit. Securing it to the wall is absolutely essential; otherwise, I’m worried they might pull on it and the unit could tip over. In addition, we added anti-slip pads to the bottom edges. This improved stability even more and reduces the risk of the unit sliding when the doors are pulled.

I think it’s really important not to take this lightly, especially with children. Thanks for all your tips so far!
