Hello everyone,

I have a problem with my IKEA Besta shelving unit: the frame is crooked, causing the doors not to close properly and making the overall appearance look very uneven. I suspect the cause is either a bent side panel or incorrect assembly at the connecting fittings. My specific question is: how can I repair a crooked frame on the IKEA Besta shelving unit as easily and permanently as possible? Which tools and techniques are recommended, especially when it comes to fine-tuning the joints and aligning the frame?

I have already tried tightening the screws and making slight adjustments, but that didn’t achieve the desired result. Does anyone have experience with this kind of issue and can offer advice on how to get the frame back into perfect alignment without having to completely dismantle the unit? Many thanks in advance for your help!

Basically, first loosen the screws of the connections, then carefully align the frame and retighten the screws.

Sometimes, it also helps to use wooden wedges underneath if the floor is uneven.

If one of the side panels is warped, this should be taken into account; otherwise, the repair will not be durable.

A detailed answer to your problem:

The Besta system is based on a modular grid with multiple connectors that can loosen or shift due to incorrect assembly or heavy use. To straighten the frame again, I recommend the following procedure:

- First, empty the furniture completely and move it away from the wall.
- Slightly loosen all screws and connectors—especially the cam lock fittings—so that the frame can be adjusted flexibly.
- Use a tape measure or a spirit level to check the corners and side panels. Imagine you want to align a perfect rectangle.
- It often helps to carefully push or pull the frame into the correct position using some force. Clamps or other holding tools are useful to temporarily fix the shelf in place.
- If you have uneven floors or small gaps under the furniture, use wooden wedges or rubber pads to level the base.
- After realigning, tighten all screws evenly and firmly. Make sure not to overtighten the connectors.
- If a panel is warped, ensure it is properly seated. If necessary, replace the part or sand it slightly if it sticks.

In terms of tools, you will need a set of hex keys (for the cam connectors), screwdrivers, and ideally a spirit level or a straight edge. Clamps or tensioning tools assist with securing the frame.

Following this method should provide a lasting and stable alignment without having to disassemble the entire frame. If it still proves challenging, please provide exact measurements or describe the problems in more detail so we can offer more targeted advice.

I can confirm this advice and add the following:

In the IKEA Besta shelving unit, the critical connections consist mainly of cam lock fasteners and dowel joints. These can shift slightly under load, leading to a misaligned frame.

It is important to check the load-bearing elements during adjustment. If the side panel is warped or swollen, the adjustment can only be partially successful. Therefore:

- Check the panel for any deformation
- Do not force loose screws tighter; instead, loosen them gently
- Align the frame using minimal force to avoid worsening any distortion
- After firmly tightening the screws, a slight play often remains, but this is usually compensated for by subsequent loading

If necessary, adding extra fasteners can help, although this is rarely needed with a Besta shelving unit.

In summary: gentle adjustment with loosened screws and consideration of mechanical stresses are essential for a lasting solution to the problem.
