Hello everyone,

I am planning to use an IKEA Besta shelving unit as a vanity cabinet and storage in the bathroom. Since wet areas are challenging for surfaces due to splashing water and high humidity, I am particularly interested in how to best protect the surface of the Besta unit to prevent water damage, swelling of the particleboard, and discoloration.

I am especially curious about which materials or sealants work well, whether there are special paints or films that are permanently resistant to water and moisture, and how to protect the sensitive edges.

Does anyone have practical experience with DIY solutions or professional methods that help make the Besta unit durable and sturdy in a wet area, without having to resort to more complex solid wood furniture?

Thanks in advance for all tips and advice!

For wet areas, always use waterproof membrane or acrylic. Paint edges with waterproof lacquer, then inspect and maintain regularly.

To protect the surface of an IKEA BESTA shelf unit in wet areas, I recommend a multi-step approach:

- First, all visible surfaces should be treated with a high-quality, water-repellent varnish. Specifically, polyurethane (PU) or acrylic varnishes are suitable, as they form a durable and thin protective layer.

- Next, I suggest adding transparent waterproof edge protection profiles or securing the edges with waterproof edge banding to prevent moisture from penetrating.

- To avoid splash water, the furniture should ideally not be in direct contact with standing moisture; using drainage channels or sealing strips between the unit and the sink is advisable.

- Using special waterproof coating films can be an alternative, but these tend to be less durable in wet areas and often do not withstand heat or harsh cleaning agents as well.

- Finally, regular maintenance and inspection of the surface are essential to detect damage or swelling early and to carry out necessary repairs.

This method offers a practical and relatively cost-effective way to extend the durability of the BESTA cabinet in wet environments.

Exactly! I treated my BESTA fronts in the bathroom with clear varnish, and the result is great!

I did that too, and it makes a big difference!

The challenge is to regularly check the protection because the humidity in the bathroom is high, and you’ll need to do some touch-ups from time to time.

But don’t worry, it’s not complicated and lasts a long time if you keep on top of it! So grab your varnish and edge protection, everyone! 🙂
