Hello everyone,
I own several IKEA Besta cabinets with matte finishes (fronts and panels) and have noticed that I’m not completely satisfied with the cleaning results. Often, after cleaning, unattractive streaks remain or the surface looks dull or dirty.
My question is: How can I properly and gently clean matte surfaces on IKEA Besta furniture to avoid residues, streaks, or even damage? Are there specific products, methods, or do’s and don’ts that should definitely be considered?
So far, I have only used simple microfiber cloths and neutral all-purpose cleaners, but I’m unsure if this is ideal for matte surfaces.
I’m looking forward to practical tips and maybe recommendations for cleaning products that are especially suitable for these surfaces. Thanks in advance!

How can I properly and gently clean matte surfaces on IKEA BESTA furniture so that no residues, streaks, or even damage occur? Are there specific products, methods, or do’s and don’ts that should definitely be considered?Basically, I recommend a particularly gentle cleaning for matte surfaces, as their top layer is often more sensitive to micro-scratches and shiny spots.
A gentle cleaning process step by step looks roughly like this:
- First, use a soft, clean microfiber cloth. Carefully remove coarser particles beforehand to avoid scratches.
- Slightly dampen the cloth with lukewarm water to gently loosen dirt.
- If stronger cleaning is necessary, a pH-neutral cleaner without aggressive chemicals, alcohol, or ammonia is recommended.
- Never spray cleaning products directly on the surface; always apply them first to the cloth.
- Work in gentle, circular motions to avoid streaks and uneven shine.
Do’s:
- If possible, test the cleaning product in an inconspicuous area first.
- Regular but gentle cleaning prevents dirt buildup.
Don’ts:
- Do not use abrasive sponges or hard brushes.
- Do not use strong solvents (acetone, paint thinner).
- Never leave the surface wet to prevent water marks.
I would like to know more specifically how severe the dirt on your BESTA furniture is. Are you mainly dealing with fingerprints, dust, or greasy grime?

Never spray cleaning products directly onto the surface; always apply them to the cloth first.Sure, that’s a basic rule that many people don’t even think about when cleaning. But honestly, I often find these “gentle” recommendations a bit over the top. When you only use water and a microfiber cloth, matte surfaces tend to become dull over time and simply suffer from dirt buildup.
My advice: To get these surfaces truly clean, sometimes you need to allow a bit more “power” against the dirt, of course without overdoing it.
- For example, I use diluted dish detergent (lightly dosed).
- I make sure not to saturate the entire piece of furniture, but I’m not afraid to use a bit more cleaning solution.
- Then immediately wipe down with a dry microfiber cloth.
There are too many myths claiming that matte surfaces are extremely sensitive. Sure, you shouldn’t use steel wool. But being overly cautious, in my opinion, also harms the result. Who wants a matte surface that shines like it used to? I think everyone needs to experiment a little to see what works.

For example, I use diluted dishwashing detergent (in small amounts). That’s a good point, but it’s important to pay attention to the detergent’s composition when using dishwashing liquid.
- If the detergent doesn’t contain harsh surfactants or softeners, it is usually not problematic.
- Never allow it to foam, as foam can promote residue buildup on matte surfaces.
Additionally, it should be noted:
- Matte surfaces made of melamine-coated particleboard, such as IKEA BESTA, are quite durable, but prolonged moisture exposure, as already mentioned, can cause damage to the edges.
- I recommend drying the surface immediately after each cleaning with a lint-free cloth to remove any remaining moisture.
If the matte surface is very sensitive or labeled by the manufacturer as scratch-prone, it’s advisable to check the care instructions provided by IKEA. In my experience, mild, pH-neutral cleaners combined with careful handling are sufficient.
I’m also interested: Do you use a special cloth or cleaner, or what is your current cleaning frequency?

I recommend drying with a lint-free cloth immediately after each cleaning to remove any moisture. This is the most important point for me when it comes to matte surfaces, and I have similar furniture myself.
One more small addition:
- It can help to slightly dampen the microfiber cloth with a small drop of high-concentration isopropyl alcohol to specifically remove greasy fingerprints.
- Use it very sparingly and dry off immediately afterward.
Because the alcohol evaporates quickly, no moisture damage occurs, and matte surfaces look truly clean without shiny spots.
Of course, don’t clean this way daily, but only if heavier dirt appears.
Important: Never apply pure alcohol in larger amounts, as this can cause damage.
If anyone has had negative experiences with this, I would be interested in hearing about them.
