Hello everyone, I recently bought shelves of the IKEA Besta model and would like to know the best way to care for the surfaces made of MDF. The surface is not solid wood but coated, and I am concerned about causing damage through inappropriate cleaning products or too much moisture. Could you share tips on which cleaning methods and products are truly suitable to keep the surface matte and prevent swelling or discoloration? I am also interested in whether there are any preventive care products that can be applied to make the surfaces more durable. Thanks in advance for your advice and experiences!

Most MDF surfaces on IKEA BESTA furniture are coated with a melamine or foil finish. This makes them relatively easy to maintain, but also sensitive to mechanical and chemical impacts. I recommend the following approach:

- Clean with a slightly damp, well-wrung cloth. Avoid wiping with a wet cloth to prevent water absorption and swelling.
- Use mild dish soap if necessary, but do not use abrasive or corrosive cleaning agents.
- For stubborn stains, a special plastic cleaner based on mild surfactants can be used, but always test first on an inconspicuous area.
- After cleaning, rinse the cloth with clean water and wipe again to remove any residues.
- Do not use waxes or oils, as they can damage the surface.

Preventive care with protective products is usually not necessary for these coated surfaces. It is more important to avoid mechanical damage caused by sharp objects or hard cleaning brushes.

If specific product recommendations are needed, I can gladly provide some examples.

Exactly, just use a damp cloth and mild dish soap. Avoid scrubbing scratches, and it will last a long time.

To further explore the care of the MDF surfaces of the IKEA BESTA system, I would like to share some technical background and practical tips.

The MDF panels used by IKEA are generally coated with a durable melamine resin or plastic foil that protects the surface from moisture and mechanical stress. However, the surface is not completely resistant, so proper care is essential.

When cleaning, please keep the following in mind:

- Never use harsh cleaning agents containing solvents such as acetone, alcohol, or bleach. These damage the coating and cause permanent harm.
- Moisture is the biggest enemy of MDF, especially if it remains for a long time. Therefore, only wipe with a slightly damp cloth and dry promptly.
- Dust buildup should be regularly removed using a microfiber cloth to avoid fine scratches caused by dirt particles.

For prevention, I recommend using protective mats under heavier objects and immediately wiping up any liquid spills. Sealing or treating these surfaces with oil or wax is not effective and may cause damage.

Could you clarify whether your surfaces have a matte or high-gloss finish? This makes a slight difference in handling and cleaning.

If stains such as ink, grease, or coffee are involved, you can carefully use an eraser and a damp cloth, always moving in the direction of the grain or coating.

I hope this helps you further.

Hey Maximo58, I have the Besta shelf myself with matte MDF surfaces and can only say: Patience when cleaning really pays off! 💪😊 A soft microfiber cloth, lukewarm water, and a splash of mild dish soap are usually enough. If you remove stains right away, everything stays looking great.

And very important: Don’t use abrasive sponges or harsh cleaners, that way you’ll enjoy it for a long time! Also, try wiping the surfaces dry from time to time to prevent dust and make maintenance easier. Good luck keeping it clean!
