ᐅ Ikea Besta: How can I prevent screws from loosening in the shelving unit?

BaumeoHello everyone,
I assembled an Ikea Besta shelving unit and noticed that some of the screws loosen again after a short time. This is obviously annoying because it makes the unit unstable, and I don’t want to have to keep tightening them constantly. My question is: How can I specifically prevent the screws in an Ikea Besta shelving unit from loosening on their own?
I have already considered whether it might be due to the type of fasteners used or if using a special adhesive or a different tightening method might help. Maybe someone has experience with whether it makes sense to reinforce critical points, for example at corner joints or shelves, with additional materials.
I would really appreciate detailed recommendations, especially if anyone has tips on how to ensure long-term stability without damaging the furniture.
Thank you in advance!

Hello Baumeo,
First of all, your concern is completely understandable. The issue of screws loosening is quite common with Besta shelving units, especially when they are under load or moved.
Regarding your question about how to specifically prevent this: several factors come into play.
- First, make sure all screws are properly tightened. This doesn’t mean overtightening, as that can damage the wood, but applying the right torque to secure the screws firmly without stripping the material.
- With the cam lock fasteners used by Ikea, slight vibrations or shifts in load can cause them to loosen. To prevent this, you can apply small amounts of medium-strength threadlocker. This keeps the screw firmly in place while still allowing removal with the appropriate tools.
- It’s also helpful to check whether the screws fit properly into their designated threads and aren’t loose. If the thread is worn out (especially on older or incorrectly assembled parts), you can use so-called Helicoil thread inserts to repair it, although this is more of a professional-level solution.
- Additionally, for critically loaded joints, applying wood glue to the contact surfaces can help. While it won’t provide a strong permanent hold, it increases friction and reduces play.
- For shelves that often carry heavy loads, it can be useful to reinforce them with brackets or additional supports from the inside to prevent twisting and wobbling.
- One last tip: regularly check whether screws have loosened, especially during the first few weeks after assembly. At this stage, the parts settle and changes in stress or alignment can occur.
If you like, you can also share which types of screws or fasteners give you the most trouble or if there are specific spots where the screws tend to loosen more often. That way, more targeted advice can be given.
Best regards!

The cam locks used by Ikea can loosen due to slight vibrations or shifts in load. To prevent this, you can apply a small amount of medium-strength threadlocker. This ensures that the screw stays firmly in place but can still be removed with the appropriate tool. This is exactly the best advice. I always use threadlocker to keep everything from wobbling. It’s important to apply only a small amount and not too tightly, otherwise the screws can be difficult to remove later.

- First, make sure that all parts are perfectly flush before tightening the screws. Even slight misalignments can cause loosening during use.
- For cam lock connectors, ensure the connection is fully engaged. You should feel a slight resistance as it locks into place.
- If you feel the holes are too large to hold the screws securely, you can use small wooden dowels or felt pads to reduce play.
- I would only recommend using screws with a larger diameter if original hole covers are not required, as this can affect the appearance.
- Finally, regular checks are advisable. Especially if your shelf is frequently moved or heavily loaded, retightening the connections after 1-2 weeks can be helpful.
This way, you can significantly extend the lifespan of your Ikea Besta shelving unit and minimize the risk of loose screws.
