ᐅ IKEA BESTA – How can I improve the drawer slides for longer durability?

Sar70Hello everyone,
I have noticed that the drawer slides on my IKEA Besta shelving unit become somewhat stiff over time, and the ease of opening and closing significantly decreases. My question to the community is: What options are there to optimize or maintain the drawer slides of the IKEA Besta models in order to extend their lifespan?
I am especially interested in methods for lubrication, the use of additional materials, or possibly tips on installation or load distribution.
I want to avoid the rails wearing out or squeaking quickly, without having to resort to expensive replacement parts.
Thanks in advance for your advice!

It is worthwhile to align the drawer slides precisely during installation and to regularly check the screws. Even small misalignments can lead to increased wear over time.
In addition, I recommend cleaning the rails and rollers regularly to remove dust and dirt, as these often act as abrasive particles and strain the mechanism. For lubrication, always use a dry silicone spray or specialized lubricants designed for metal-on-metal contact to avoid attracting dirt particles.
The weight load on the drawers should also be considered: overloading increases pressure on the slides and reduces their lifespan. Distributing the load evenly can help with this.

I always keep silicone spray nearby; it keeps the mechanism smooth and quiet—no more annoying squeaking sounds! Just stay on top of it, and the hardware will last several years longer! 🎉
One more tip: try attaching felt pads to the underside of heavy drawers—it reduces friction and protects the rails. Give it a try!

Besides silicone spray, it also helps not to overload the drawers with heavy stacks of books – a moderate load distributes the forces better.
And if you’re into DIY projects: you can replace the original rollers with high-quality stainless steel ball bearings, which adds smoothness and durability. Not rocket science, but it really feels like an upgrade for the furniture! 😎
