Hello everyone, I’m planning to use the IKEA Besta system in my small apartment to optimize space usage as effectively as possible. Since I have very limited floor area, my main goal is to create more storage without making the room feel cluttered or restricting movement. My question is: which Besta configurations, materials, and combinations with accessories (such as doors, boxes, or shelving units) work best to improve small apartments efficiently, functionally, and also aesthetically? If anyone has experience with flexible solutions that can adapt to changing needs, I would really appreciate hearing about them. Tips on special installation or mounting methods that save space are also very welcome. Thanks in advance for your advice!

I haven’t really embraced open shelving so far because I thought it would quickly look messy.

That’s a valid point and quite common. I had a similar issue. What helped was using open shelves selectively for very tidy items and decorative pieces.

For the rest, I used some compartments with doors to hide the "clutter" underneath. The psychological effect was significant: it no longer felt overcrowded.

Vertical use of space with stacked but secured modules.

I can definitely confirm that. Securing shelves to the wall is important, especially if there are children around or if the shelves might get pulled on.

Give yourself some time to get used to the arrangement. I kept reorganizing until it really worked.

Small tip: Try using different shelf heights.

Exactly! I would add that using accessories like baskets or boxes can help organize smaller items. This greatly increases flexibility.

For me, the combination of open shelves with stylish baskets and closed doors worked wonders, especially in small apartments.

And don’t be afraid of tall stacks—as long as everything is properly secured and the designs don’t look too bulky, it actually creates a more elegant appearance.

Enjoy the planning—small spaces are a great challenge!
