Hello everyone, I am planning to use my IKEA Besta system as a media unit and would like to incorporate a neat cable management solution. Specifically, I am looking for a way to assemble the shelving so that the cables from various devices like the TV, receiver, and soundbar can be routed cleanly through the furniture without hanging loose or becoming tangled behind it. Are there any proven methods or special accessories from IKEA or third-party suppliers that work well for this? I am also interested in whether it is better to cut out sections of the back panel or if it is more practical to drill holes or use cable grommets myself. Any expert tips or shared experiences on setting up a media unit with effective cable management would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I replaced it with a custom-cut perforated panel that I made myself.A good solution that has also proven effective in professional settings. If you cannot find a suitable perforated panel, you should look for metal or wood panels with perforations that can be easily adapted. The perforations also improve air circulation, which can be beneficial for electronic devices.
As a supplement: Audio equipment and power cables should be routed separately to avoid electromagnetic interference. For the Besta shelving unit, it is advisable to use a separate channel or dedicated cable management for power cables—such as along the edge of the module. Connecting the middle compartments through cable openings makes sense if you place central devices there. Cable ties with Velcro closures are also recommended, allowing for flexible adjustments in the future.

The opening was sized appropriately and fitted with a cable protection grommet. That exactly helped me as well. The protection grommet is a small detail that greatly contributes to the longevity of the cables. Such small things are often underestimated, but they are really important.

They are often more affordable and have an advantage over drilling, as they can be removed without leaving any residue. This is important if you decide to redesign later or move the furniture. If you invest some time, you can find suitable solutions in the furniture accessories category.
