Hello everyone, some time ago I bought an IKEA Besta chest of drawers that I really like. However, I am concerned about scratches and impact damage on the surface and edges, as the paint does not seem very thick or durable. Therefore, I am looking for effective ways or materials to protect my Besta chest from such damage without compromising the overall appearance or functionality. Does anyone have experience with protective films, paint sealants, or other protective measures specifically for Besta or similar surfaces? Which solutions have proven effective, and what should be avoided? Thanks in advance for your advice!

As an additional option, transparent protective films can be applied to surfaces multiple times if painting is not desired. Thanks for the tip, tra_nina. That’s exactly what I was looking for – a solution that doesn’t damage the finish and is reversible.

I covered my BESTA dresser with a clear furniture film and I’m really happy with it How does it hold up to wear and tear after longer use? Are there any issues with air bubbles, or does the film lift at the edges?
I’m asking because I’m not sure if a simple protective film without professional installation will last in the long run.
The durability of protective films largely depends on the quality of the film and the preparation of the surface. For the Besta cabinet, I recommend high-quality, crystal-clear vinyl films with UV protection.
With careful application, ideally using tools for smooth pressing and under controlled conditions (dust-free environment, room temperature), air bubbles can be largely avoided. If the edges are properly deburred and the surface is clean, the film adheres optimally.
Additionally, you should avoid using films that are too thin, as these tend to lift at the edges during everyday use. For the Besta surface, I recommend a film thickness of at least 80 micrometers (0.08 mm).
Professional installation can reduce such issues, but with some craftsmanship skills, DIY is also possible.
