Hello everyone, some time ago I bought an IKEA Besta chest of drawers that I really like. However, I am concerned about scratches and impact damage on the surface and edges, as the paint does not seem very thick or durable. Therefore, I am looking for effective ways or materials to protect my Besta chest from such damage without compromising the overall appearance or functionality. Does anyone have experience with protective films, paint sealants, or other protective measures specifically for Besta or similar surfaces? Which solutions have proven effective, and what should be avoided? Thanks in advance for your advice!

The most effective protective films are self-adhesive sheets made of transparent vinyl. They provide good protection against scratches and are easy to clean. Alternatively, felt pads can be attached to the corners to prevent impact damage.

Great question! I covered my BESTA dresser with a clear furniture film and I’m really happy with it 😄 It provides excellent protection and you can hardly tell it’s there. Easy to apply, and if needed, the film can be removed without leaving any residue. Give it a try—this can prevent a lot of headaches!

For proper surface care and protection of IKEA BESTA, I recommend the following approach: - Use a thin, transparent polyurethane varnish layer specifically designed for MDF or particleboard. This provides long-lasting protection against scratches and moisture. - Alternatively, clear lacquer products from specialty retailers with multiple coats can be applied to make the surface more durable. - For felt pads and protective caps, ensure they fit securely and precisely to effectively cushion impacts. Combining varnish protection with mechanical protection is ideal. The most important point is to avoid any treatment that distorts the design or leaves a greasy surface, as this can negatively affect both appearance and function.

To protect the BESTA dresser, it is advisable to place a glass top on it if possible. This prevents scratches from objects and is easy to clean. Otherwise, use felt pads for the corners and edges.

In my opinion, this recommendation is especially effective because polyurethane varnish offers high hardness and abrasion resistance. It is important to thoroughly clean and lightly sand the surface before application to ensure proper adhesion.

Felt pads protect against impacts but not against micro-scratches and abrasion; therefore, it is advisable to combine macroscopic protection with a coating.

As an addition, multiple layers of transparent protective films can be applied to the surfaces if varnishing is not desired. The functionality of the drawers will not be affected as long as the films are cut precisely.
