Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I purchased the Ikea Besta shelving unit with drawers, but unfortunately, the drawers don’t slide as smoothly as I expected. In particular, the movement sometimes feels jerky and requires quite a bit of force to open and close. I have already visually checked the rails and rollers but didn’t find any obvious damage or foreign objects causing obstruction.

My question is: How can I make the drawers of the Ikea Besta shelving unit slide more smoothly in a lasting way and with minimal effort? Are there proven methods that also help extend the lifespan of the drawers? What products are suitable, and are there any special maintenance tips for the rollers or rails?

I would appreciate helpful tips and specific advice, as I would prefer not to completely disassemble the drawers or perform very complex modifications. Thanks in advance!

Hello Sanpo,

First of all, it’s good that you have already visually inspected the rails and rollers. In smooth-running drawers like those in the Ikea Besta system, the rolling elements or the rails themselves are usually the cause of any sticking or rough movement.

Here is a structured approach:

- First, fully extend the drawer and carefully remove it. It’s worthwhile to thoroughly clean the rails and rollers from dust, lint, or other debris. A small vacuum cleaner or a brush works best for this.
- Next, check the rollers: Are they damaged, cracked, or sticky? If so, they should be replaced, and Ikea typically offers these as spare parts.
- For lubricating the rollers and rails, a silicone-based spray or a special plastic lubricant is best. Avoid any mineral oil–based oils, as these attract dirt and reduce smoothness.
- Apply the lubricant sparingly to the moving parts and slide the drawer in and out several times to distribute it evenly.
- If the drawer still does not slide smoothly, check whether it is installed correctly, as improper assembly can cause friction.

In summary: cleaning, inspection, lubrication, and correct assembly are the four main steps. I hope this helps!

I can understand how frustrating sticky drawers can be, especially when you just want to use the furniture practically.

If you’re not confident about cleaning or lubricating them, I would recommend taking it slowly and testing the drawers regularly in between to see how they feel. Sometimes the material can still feel stiff after cleaning if there isn’t enough lubricant or if too much has been applied.

I also think it’s important not to get discouraged. Sometimes it takes small adjustments and patience during maintenance before everything runs smoothly. If you like, you can share what you have already tried – then the community can offer more targeted advice.

Clean the rails with alcohol and then use silicone spray. Avoid WD-40. If the rollers are old, it is better to replace them.

This is a very important recommendation. I would like to add some technical details:

The drawers from Ikea Besta typically use steel metal rails with plastic rollers. The material of the rollers is sensitive to unsuitable lubricants; especially mineral oils can damage the plastic by causing swelling or brittleness.

My advice:
- Use only high-quality silicone-based sprays that are explicitly suitable for plastic components.
- Before lubricating, clean the rails with a lint-free cloth and isopropanol to remove old lubricant residues.
- If possible, remove the drawer and also check the spring mechanisms, which can sometimes cause resistance.

Furthermore, I wonder how often you use the drawers. Drawers that are used too infrequently tend to dry out mechanically, which makes sliding more difficult. Regular opening and lubrication can help here. What kind of load do your drawers carry? Are there heavy items inside?

The more precisely you describe the conditions, the better we can tailor suggestions for you.

Are there proven methods to simultaneously extend the lifespan of drawers?

This is a crucial point. Simple lubrication may provide a short-term fix, but in the long run, improper maintenance or overly tight adjustment can cause damage.

My tip for durability:
- Regularly check the alignment of the drawer, as misalignment significantly increases wear and friction.
- Do not overload the drawers; manufacturers like Ikea usually specify maximum load capacities that should be followed.
- If you notice noises or stiff movement, gently retighten the screws of the drawer slides if they are not already too tight, since some play is needed for proper adjustment.
- Avoid using aggressive cleaning agents that might damage plastics or surface finishes.

Additionally, re-lubricating with a high-quality plastic or Teflon spray every few months is recommended if the drawers are used frequently.

A combination of thorough cleaning, light lubrication, respecting load limits, and checking the installation is the best way to maximize the drawer’s lifespan.
