Hello everyone, I am planning to install lighting inside my Ikea BESTÅ shelving unit because the interior, especially in the closed compartments, feels too dark. My question is: How can I integrate lighting that is both practical and bright enough, while also being minimalist and requiring as little complicated modification as possible? Does anyone have experience with installing LED strips, battery-powered lights, or other types of lighting specifically for the BESTÅ modules? I would appreciate concrete tips on mounting, power supply (e.g., hardwired or battery-operated?), and also advice on cable management to avoid tangled wires. If anyone has recommendations for compatible kits or products, I would be grateful to hear about them. Thanks in advance!

The main challenge with most lighting in BESTÅ is the power supply. Battery power is obviously flexible but usually weaker, and people often forget to recharge it. Mains power is more reliable but often means drilling through the panel and running cables. That goes against your desire for minimal modifications.

I would first strongly recommend checking if you have at least one power outlet nearby and if you can discreetly run a thin cable. Then you can use LED strips with a power adapter.

Is smart integration important to you as well, for example with motion sensors? Or is traditional on/off switching sufficient?

I understand that it can be challenging to find a solution that is both practical and visually appealing. For my BESTÅ shelf with doors, I first tried simple battery-powered lights, but the mounts were not very stable, and above all, I found the constant battery replacement stressful.

Maybe a solution with rechargeable batteries could be interesting for you as well? There are now many LED strips with USB-C charging that can be easily removed. You can take them out in the evening to charge, so no cables or drilling are necessary. It works great for me, although I admit I sometimes forget to charge them.

What kind of light color do you prefer? Warm white or cool white?

That sums it up pretty well. I have a power outlet nearby, which I might be able to connect to the BESTÅ via cable ducts on the back. However, I’d rather avoid drilling directly through the back panel because I want to maintain the modular flexibility.

I’m leaning towards a neutral white, around 4000K, so the colors of the items on my shelves appear as natural as possible. I like warm white for living spaces, but for shelves, I often find it a bit too yellowish.

Hello, here is a brief guide on how to install lighting in a BESTÅ unit – I focus on the mains-powered option because the lighting is then permanent and bright.

- Step 1: Choosing the light sources
12V DC LED strips are standardized, easily dimmable, and affordable. For shelves, I recommend strips with at least 60 LEDs per meter to achieve even illumination.

- Step 2: Installation
The back panel of the BESTÅ is usually a thin fiberboard. You can either use it as a cable channel or carefully mill a recess – if you want to keep the back panel intact, I suggest attaching the strips with double-sided tape to the upper inner frame.

- Step 3: Power supply
Use a small 12V power supply which you can place on the cabinet floor or outside the unit. Route the cables through the designated compartments, preferably along the edges to keep them nearly invisible.

- Step 4: Switch and control
A small on/off switch or a motion sensor is optional. You can easily hide a motion sensor behind a glass or flap door.

Warning: Avoid LED strips with excessively bright light or poor heat dissipation, as they can damage both the film and the wood.

I hope this helps you!

I would like to point out that safety plays an important role when installing lighting in IKEA BESTÅ units. The furniture is often made of particleboard, which is not heat-resistant. Therefore, the light source should emit as little heat as possible – LED lighting is ideal in this context.

In addition, I recommend paying attention to the following technical aspects:

- Power supply quality: Make sure it has CE certification and short-circuit protection.
- Wiring: Cables should be sufficiently insulated and protected against tension.
- Cable routing: It is best to use existing cutouts or cable conduits in the BESTÅ corners.

If the DIY project is carried out professionally, the risk is minimal. There are also ready-made LED lighting kits specifically designed for BESTÅ, which minimize the need for special tools.

The goal is a combination of safety, functionality, and aesthetics.
