Hello everyone,

I recently assembled an Ikea Besta shelving unit but found that some essential screws for the assembly were missing. My question is: how can I easily and accurately replace these missing screws without having to buy the entire set again?

I’m particularly interested in advice on which types of screws or alternatives work best to ensure the long-term stability of the furniture. Are there specific sources to obtain them or particular measurements and thread types that I should definitely pay attention to?

I look forward to your experiences and suggestions, thanks in advance!

Hello raguli,

Regarding your question about how to easily replace missing screws for the Ikea BESTA shelving unit, I’d like to provide a more detailed explanation, as several factors come into play:

- First, you should precisely identify which screws are missing: length, diameter, thread type (metric or imperial), and the material are all important.

- Ikea often uses cam screws, dowels, and countersunk screws in the BESTA system, which are not always standard items. Replacement with simple screws from a hardware store often only works to a limited extent.

- If they are just regular chipboard screws, you can usually find identical models at a local screw supplier or a well-stocked hardware store. It is important to measure the dimensions exactly, for example with a caliper or by consulting a screw catalog.

- If it concerns cam screws (which fasten the connection plate in BESTA systems), replacement can be more complicated because the thread and head shape are special.

- Sometimes it helps to contact Ikea’s customer service; they usually send replacement parts free of charge or for a small fee.

- As a temporary solution, you can also use screw sets with similar dimensions, but be careful: some screws can damage the shelves or connection points if they do not fit exactly.

I’m curious: do you know exactly which type of screw is missing, or do you only have a general overview? And how many parts are missing? For just a few screws, contacting Ikea is definitely worthwhile.

Looking forward to your feedback!

If I were you, I would first talk to a screw supplier and take the measurements. Chipboard screws of the correct length are usually sufficient. If they are cam lock screws, use Ikea’s replacement service.

Hello raguli,

I had a similar issue with a BESTA shelf. It’s important not to replace the original screws with just any replacements, especially if they are meant to connect furniture parts. Otherwise, the stability can be affected.

Back then, I ordered the missing screws directly from Ikea. It took a few days, but everything fit perfectly.

If you want to measure the screws yourself, I recommend measuring the length including the threaded part and the head, and carefully determining the thread diameter. Screws with the wrong thread can quickly damage the wood.

If you are in a hurry and can’t get replacements from Ikea, get ones from a hardware store with the closest possible measurements, but test them first on an inconspicuous area to see if everything holds.

Are there specific screws you’re missing? For example, cam locks, small metal dowels, or wood screws?

Exactly, testing is important so you don’t cause any permanent damage. Often, cam lock screws like those used in BESTA are not easy to replace. They need to fit precisely because they hold the furniture firmly together.

That would be crucial for further assessment.

If you want to replace standard wood screws, pan head screws or wood screws for particleboard with similar dimensions are recommended. Using the wrong length can reduce load capacity or cause parts to push apart.

Maybe you could also mark exactly where the screws are missing? That would allow for more targeted advice.
