Hello everyone,

I am planning to assemble an IKEA Besta shelving unit but want to have the option to adjust the shelf heights flexibly and individually. My question is: What is the best way to build shelving with variable shelf heights?

Specifically, I’m interested in whether there are suitable solutions that differ from the standard use of the Besta components to make retrofitting, rearranging, or adjusting the shelves easier later on.

Are there any special fittings, rails, or techniques you would recommend? I’m looking for advice on materials, assembly steps, and possible challenges – it should be stable but also flexible.

Looking forward to your tips and experiences!
Best regards,
Halit

This way, you can adjust the height anytime without damaging the shelf. Plus, your shelf becomes much more stable, which is a big advantage when holding heavy items.

Exactly, and the best part is: with the slotted standards, you can easily free up shelf height for larger items anytime and simply rearrange everything!

I did it like this myself, and it holds up great and looks professional. Super practical and really flexible! 🙂

The only important thing is to align the side panels properly; otherwise, it can be frustrating when inserting the shelves later.

How exactly do these slotted strips work, and how are they installed so that the shelves can be easily adjusted?

To clarify technically:

- Slotted strips are usually made of metal or plastic and have a precisely punched row of holes designed for shelf supports.
- They are typically mounted with small screws, about 3.5 x 20 mm (1/8 x 3/4 inches), which you screw directly into the side panel of the Besta cabinet. Pre-drilling with a 2-3 mm (3/32 - 1/8 inch) drill bit is recommended to prevent the material from splitting.
- The slotted strips should be installed at the same height on both sides, as precisely as possible to the millimeter, to avoid the shelves tilting.
- For shelf supports, you use special hooks or clips that can be quickly inserted and removed. Each pair of supports can easily hold 20-30 kg (45-66 lbs), ideal for your media setup.

Practically, this system allows many individual height adjustments that you can change at will. It is especially useful if you want to sort items differently or adapt shelves for various objects.

I also recommend leveling the shelves slightly before screwing them in, using a spirit level or a flat surface – this makes later adjustments much easier.

If you need more specific product names or sources, just ask!

For Besta, universal screws with wood threads are suitable since the side panels are often made of particleboard.

Exactly, just use wood screws, no dowels needed.

- Adjust the perforated strips
- Fasten them evenly
- Insert the floor supports

This way you stay very flexible and can adjust things anytime.

I simply used the existing holes in my Besta shelf unit, which are spaced in a 32mm (1.26 inch) grid pattern. This allows you to move the shelves back and forth as you like.

If there are no suitable holes, use slotted metal strips. This is the best method for a flexible setup.
