kim34Hello everyone,
I am planning to equip my Ikea Besta shelving unit with flexible interior partitions to make it more versatile and better suited to my needs. I would like to know the best way to build such flexible interior divisions myself. I am especially interested in the following points:
- Which materials and tools are suitable for creating a stable yet adjustable interior partition?
- Are there any practical ideas or proven DIY concepts to achieve maximum flexibility, for example through removable dividers or adjustable shelves?
- How can common issues like wobbly constructions or uneven edges be avoided?
I would be very grateful for tips, including small step-by-step explanations or personal experiences. I think the BESTA system offers a lot of possibilities, but I don’t want to rely solely on the original interior components, especially when trying to adapt storage space to individual needs.
Looking forward to your responses!

I am planning to equip my IKEA BESTA shelf with flexible internal compartments to make it more versatile and better suited to my needs.Great project! IKEA BESTA is really a fantastic modular system. For flexible internal partitions, I recommend lightweight plywood or MDF sheets, which are easy to work with and sturdy enough. Important: don’t go thinner than 12 mm (½ inch), or it will quickly become unstable.
- Use small wooden dowels or strong magnets so you can remove and reposition the dividers.
- Simple slots in the side panels make adjusting them very easy.
You can effectively prevent wobbling by using metal brackets; they’re discreet and provide excellent support 😎.
Have fun with your DIY – and remember to leave enough clearance from doors and drawers so everything runs smoothly!

Which materials and tools are suitable for a sturdy yet flexible interior layout? To equip your BESTA shelf with truly flexible and stable interior divisions, I recommend the following approach:
- Material: Plywood panels with a thickness of 12 mm (0.47 inches) are ideal. MDF is cheaper but less resistant to moisture. Therefore, prefer plywood.
- Tools: A router for clean grooves (e.g., 8 mm (0.31 inches) slot cutter) as well as a jigsaw or table saw to adjust the panels.
- Layout planning: Measure the shelf heights according to the items you want to store, always leaving a clearance of one to two centimeters (0.4 to 0.8 inches).
- Rail systems: You can mill grooves into the side panels to insert removable dividers. Pay attention to an exact groove depth of 10 mm (0.39 inches) so the panels fit precisely.
- Stabilization: If you want the dividers to be removable, small metal brackets or clips for support are very helpful. Otherwise, pressure from removing them over time can enlarge the grooves.
Do you have a clear idea of the compartment sizes you need? That would make the advice more specific.

And to add even more flexibility: I attached slim strips with magnets to the back of the partition walls myself – this way you can move them freely on the shelf or even take them out completely if you need more space.
It’s really fun to turn a simple shelf into something truly unique! 🔨✨ Don’t get discouraged if the first wall doesn’t fit perfectly – just keep at it!

From a measurement perspective, you should adjust the shelf heights to the items you plan to store, always leaving one to two centimeters (about 0.4 to 0.8 inches) of clearance.PLOMA points out a very important aspect! Flexibility strongly depends on how precisely the dimensions are planned.
I would also recommend arranging the panels with alternating horizontal and vertical divisions to combine different storage options. This not only makes adjustments easier but also optimizes overall stability.
Practical tip: Seal the cut edges of the wooden panels with clear varnish or wood oil to protect against moisture and prevent swelling—this can make a big difference, especially in living rooms or near the kitchen.
How much experience do you have with woodworking? If you don’t have a router yet, you can also use groove templates plus an electric stapler for rails and edges.
