Hello everyone, I am currently planning a DIY renovation using the IKEA BESTÅ system and want to create an illuminated shelving unit. My goal is to evenly light each individual shelf, preferably with LED strips that are easy to install and later easy to maintain. Does anyone have experience with the best way to mount the LED strips, which power supply and switches are recommended, and how to cleverly hide the cables without negatively affecting the design? Tips on necessary tools or special IKEA modules that work well would also be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your expert suggestions!

LED strips with a self-adhesive backing work best for the BESTÅ. For the power connection, I would use a 12V power supply, which is more than sufficient. It’s best to run the cables inside through the back panel and secure them with cable clips. You can use an inline switch or a remote control switch.

Mega project! Installing warm white LED strips worked really well for me and makes the shelf feel very cozy 🙂 It’s best to use a dimmable controller so you can adjust the brightness individually. Pro tip: Use good adhesive tape (3M tape) and test all the LEDs beforehand before fixing everything in place. Good luck!

The challenge with BESTÅ systems often lies in integrating lighting that is not only functional but also visually appealing. I recommend planning the power supply carefully before attaching the LED strips and leaving enough slack in the cables. Additionally, use separate circuits for individual shelves to increase flexibility in lighting. A 12V transformer with overload protection significantly enhances safety. It is also advisable to make the back panel easy to remove, allowing for repairs or additions later without much effort.

For installation, I recommend using LED aluminum profile channels. The adhesive tapes do not always hold permanently on the smooth surfaces of BESTÅ. Aluminum profiles provide better support and heat dissipation.

When installing, you should also pay attention to heat buildup. Although LEDs remain cool, heat can accumulate on plastic components. Maintain a distance between the LED strips and wood, or use aluminum profiles as mentioned earlier. It is best to secure cables with cable ties.
