Hello everyone, I am planning to combine several Ikea Besta cabinets into a larger unit and have some questions about the practical implementation. Specifically, I would like to know how to securely and stably connect the individual cabinets so that the overall furniture piece has a unified appearance and doesn’t come apart or wobble during use. I’m particularly interested in tips regarding the connection mechanisms—whether special screws, connectors, or other tools should be used. It would also be helpful to learn how to achieve a seamless look, meaning how to visually harmonize the fronts and carcasses. Maybe someone has experience with anchoring to the wall, as I want to build a freestanding but still stable unit. Thank you in advance for your advice!

Hello Fobar55, your project with the Besta combination is interesting and a common topic, but there are some important details to consider during planning to avoid ending up with unstable furniture.

First, regarding joining the units: IKEA does not provide special connectors to securely join multiple Besta boxes together. Therefore, I recommend using strong furniture connectors such as cam connectors (also known as Minifix). These can be used if you drill the appropriate holes in the side panels—ideally before assembly. This will create a very solid connection that can also be loosened later if needed without damaging the material.

When placing the boxes side by side, make sure the side panels align perfectly, as the appearance is crucial. Cover caps or special joint strips help to disguise the seams. Alternatively, some users apply painted MDF strips in the same color to close small gaps.

Regarding wall mounting: The Besta units have holes for the matching wall brackets. Since your combination will be larger, I strongly recommend securing each individual module accordingly. This prevents tipping or shifting, especially with taller setups.

A quick question: How many boxes do you plan to connect and what should the overall size be? Then I can advise you more specifically about load capacity and fastening.

One last tip: If your combination includes doors or drawers, the hinges must be properly adjusted to ensure that everything fits neatly and flush despite the connection. It is worth checking all adjustments again after assembly.

Simply connect the boxes from the inside using wood screws, with at least two screws per connection. Do not forget to fix them to the wall, as this greatly increases stability.

I can only agree with that. I’d like to add how to systematically approach assembling a larger Besta combination neatly:

- Preparation: It is important to align the boxes on a clean, level surface. Unevenness on the floor can cause warping later on.

- Connection: Use cam connectors whenever possible, as recommended by bapar. Before final assembly, precisely mark the holes using a template; this way, you can glue the boxes together accurately.

- Stabilization: In addition to the connectors, I recommend reinforcing the shelves from behind with angle brackets screwed to the back panel if you want to increase rigidity.

- Adjusting the front panels: For a harmonious look, you can align the edges with thin MDF spacers or slightly fine-tune the fronts. A decal in the right color shade can conceal small gaps.

- Wall mounting: Especially with taller combinations, securing the unit to the wall is essential. Using the right hardware (anchors, screws) is crucial to ensure even load distribution.

Finally: If you combine different depths or heights, plan the transitions carefully. It pays off to double-check measurements multiple times to avoid unpleasant surprises during assembly.

Good luck with your build!
