Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to redesign my living room and want to build a corner shelf using several Ikea Besta units. I understand that the BESTA systems are basically modular, but what concerns me is how to connect them technically correctly and, above all, stably as a corner solution.

Specifically, I’m interested in: What is the best way to join two or more BESTA units so that they stand securely at a 90-degree angle without wobbling or the structure warping over time? What types of connectors or methods are useful here?

I have also considered whether using wood panels or metal brackets could help reinforce the corner joint and how to keep this as visually discreet as possible.

Does anyone have experience with such DIY corner shelves made from BESTA or can describe in detail how to ideally approach a project like this to achieve a long-lasting, stable, and clean result?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Hello jonbau,

your question is very specific and well formulated. The challenge with BESTA corner connections is indeed stability, since the modules are designed individually and there are no dedicated corner connectors available in Ikea’s standard range.

The following steps have proven effective:

- Use strong metal or angle brackets inside the corner gap: you can secure these from the inside with short screws to the side panels. This provides good stability.
- Optionally, it is helpful to join the backs of the two units with an additional thin wooden board. This significantly reinforces the overall structure.
- Make sure both BESTA units are aligned exactly at right angles before connecting them. A spirit level can be very useful here.
- It is best to assemble the units lying flat on the floor to avoid warping.

Visually, you can camouflage the connection with color-matched wood accents or by adding a corner shelf.

I do not recommend simply screwing together the back panels, as they do not hold up well over time. A combination of brackets and boards will give you the best long-term stability.

Hello jonbau,

I would like to offer a detailed step-by-step approach for building a corner shelf unit from several BESTA modules, as I have personally completed multiple corner solutions using this system.

1. Planning & Preparation
- Measuring: First, create an accurate sketch with the dimensions of your room and the planned PREMIUM CORNER CONSTRUCTION.
- Selecting components: Choose BESTA units in the desired sizes. Make sure you have at least two identical units for connecting them together.

2. Connection Technique
- Using strong metal brackets: Use at least 4 brackets per connection point, preferably 90-degree heavy-duty metal brackets, which you screw together on the inside of the side panels.
- Reinforcement with wood panels: Cut a spruce plywood panel into a triangle shaped to fit the corner. Attach it with screws on the inside, left and right, to the modules.
- Alternative connection: Special corner connectors for BESTA made of aluminum or similar materials are available online – if accessible, they greatly simplify assembly.

3. Assembly
- Alignment: Place the units on the floor without back panels and align them precisely using a spirit level.
- Screwing: First connect the units with the metal brackets, then screw in the wood panel on the inside.
- Attaching the back panels: These both provide stability and the typical BESTA look.

4. Tips & Avoiding Mistakes
- Do not use screws that are too long and could protrude through the side panels of the shelves.
- Pre-drill holes before screwing to prevent wood splitting.
- Trim back panels if necessary to allow unrestricted movement.

Summary:
A combination of metal brackets and wooden reinforcements is key to a stable and durable corner shelf unit. All components must be precisely matched and assembled step by step.

I hope this detailed guide helps you.

Simply attach sturdy metal brackets on the inside of the side panels. Pre-drill the holes and use screws of the appropriate length – this provides a strong and cost-effective connection.

Hello jonbau,

I would like to add that you should definitely pay attention to the load-bearing capacity of each BESTA element in your project. Making the corner joint sturdy is important, but it does not replace the structural limits of the individual modules.

My recommendation:

- Align the modules exactly at right angles and initially secure them only temporarily, for example with clamps.
- When attaching the corner shelf to the wall, use screws in addition to brackets and wooden panels, securing them with anchors.
- Consider the finish: you can cover visible connectors with color-matched caps to create a cleaner look.

It is also helpful to have an assistant during assembly who can hold everything straight and position the elements for you.

From my own experience: impatience during alignment leads to crooked results, so take your time with each step.

If you like, I can also give you some tips on the screw lengths and bracket thicknesses I used.
