Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to build a custom combination using the Ikea Besta system. I specifically want to include a version with open shelving to create a more airy and modern look. My question is: How do I construct a Besta combination with open shelves so that the shelves remain stable, look appealing, and integrate well into an existing wall or media furniture setup?

I would appreciate tips on installation, choosing the right door and shelf combinations, as well as recommendations for suitable accessories (e.g., back panels, connectors, etc.). Additionally, I would like to know if there are any special tricks or common mistakes to avoid when installing the open shelves.

Thank you in advance for your experience and advice!

A few additional notes specifically regarding "open shelves in the Besta system" and stability:

- The BESTA modules are originally designed to work best with a back panel. Especially with open shelves without a back panel, the combination of multiple modules can seem unstable.
- Therefore, it is essential to secure the unit to the wall, even if the furniture stands freely. This prevents the risk of tipping.
- For open shelves, metal or wooden braces are also suitable, which you can either mount discreetly on the back or use as a design element.
- The connection points between modules (the supplied metal connectors) are important but should be reinforced with additional screws or brackets in an open configuration.

I built a combination with 3 open and 2 closed modules and added thin metal brackets inside the open shelves to improve stability. Since then, I have had no issues.

Hello, I would like to offer you a somewhat more general perspective:

The combination with open shelves in the BESTA system benefits greatly from thorough preparation. You should consider:

- How do you want to design the back? (back panel, metal bracing, glass)
- What load is expected?
- Are the elements fixed and secured (wall mounting / anchoring)?

By the way, I recommend adding wooden or metal strips to the more open elements, which can also serve as visual dividers. This way, open shelves look more modern and at the same time remain stable.

Regarding assembly: It’s best to build all modules separately first and then join them together. This helps avoid misalignments.

I would probably either leave individual compartments completely open or entire modules, as mixing different styles can sometimes appear visually cluttered.

If you want open shelves, I recommend:
- definitely use a back panel, even if thin
- use metal brackets
- don’t forget wall mounting

This ensures safety during use and long durability.

Open shelving units should not just stand loosely for stability – if necessary, reinforce them with metal brackets.

I agree with this and would like to add:
When installing open elements, using MDF panels as a backboard often helps because they are very straight and stabilize the overall structure.

Here is a brief step-by-step guide:

- Assemble modules according to the plan
- Insert MDF back panels, cut to size, and secure firmly with screws
- Connect the modules using fasteners
- Use metal brackets for additional stability (especially with tall configurations)
- For freestanding furniture, always secure it to the wall

This prevents warping and unwanted distortion. It’s worth cutting the back panels before assembling the modules.
