ᐅ IKEA BESTA DIY – How Do I Build a Combination with Different Depths?

Hello everyone, I have a question about IKEA Besta and hope that someone here has experience with custom combinations. I am planning to build a combination of BESTA cabinets, but some components should have different depths – for example, some carcasses 40cm (16 inches) deep, others only 20cm (8 inches) – so they can be mounted on the wall while still making the best use of storage space. My question is how to best design and connect such a combination to ensure stability without compromising the appearance. Are there special connectors, extensions, or tricks for this? I am also interested in how different depths affect front panels and door installation, especially with varying cabinet sizes. I would appreciate any help that explains in detail what needs to be considered and hope for practical tips!

Mega project! 😊 Make sure to design the transition between different depths using trim or shadow gaps – it looks very stylish and hides small irregularities! Good luck, it’s going to be great!

Exactly, these visual tricks are important, especially when you can’t achieve perfect precision everywhere. I would also recommend choosing fastening elements for varying depths that are barely visible during assembly – for example, connector plates installed inside the cabinet. This also improves stability.

If you plan to mount the furniture on the wall, be sure to use screws with sufficient load capacity and check that you are drilling into a load-bearing wall. Additional wall anchors might also be useful for extra safety.

Finally, a tip: When building a Besta combination with different depths, it is important to pay attention to load distribution. For example, if you have a deep unit next to a shallow one and the combination is wall-mounted, you want to prevent the deeper part from lifting or tipping the lighter one.

Therefore, I recommend:

- Rigid connections between components, such as using concealed corner brackets
- Using multiple and appropriate wall fasteners
- Aligning the fronts in depth, if necessary with filler panels

And last but not least, carefully study the assembly instructions from IKEA. They often include information on load capacity and mounting methods.

Good luck with your project!
