Hello everyone, I am currently planning a DIY project using the Ikea Besta system and want to integrate a wine rack into it. My specific question is: How can a wine rack be effectively built into the modular BESTA units so that it is stable, visually appealing, and provides enough space for standard wine bottles? It is important to me to have the right shelf dimensions as well as mounting options to securely store the bottles without them slipping. Has anyone had experience with this or can offer advice on the best technical approach? Tips on suitable shelves, materials, or additional components would also be helpful. Thanks in advance for your support!

Basically, you should size the compartments to be about 33 cm deep (13 inches) – this fits most standard wine bottles well. Steel or metal rods on the sides serve as guides to prevent shifting. Make sure to securely fix the shelves so they can withstand the load.

I recommend designing the dimensions so that the bottles can be stored at an angle of about 15 degrees. This way, the cork always stays in contact with the bottle, keeping it moist – which is important for preservation. Simply secure them using wooden dowels or L-profiles.

Oh, DIY with Ikea BESTA and wine racks sounds like a really cool project! 😄 I especially like it when you build small angled compartments so the bottles not only stay secure but also look stylish. A tip from me: use wooden strips as dividers and maybe some felt underneath to prevent rattling. This way, everything stays elegant and feels high-quality.

This brings me to a follow-up question: Is it better to use the original Bestå shelves, or would you recommend special ones, perhaps thicker wood or plywood panels, for wine storage? And what about additional reinforcements to prevent sagging? I’m concerned that the often thin shelves may not be ideal for the weight of the bottles.

The original shelves of Ikea BESTA are usually too thin for heavy wine storage, especially when many bottles are grouped together. A plywood board with a minimum thickness of 18 mm (0.7 inches) provides significantly more stability. It is also important to have a cross brace or to glue additional supports beneath the shelf to prevent sagging over time. This is the only way to ensure lasting safety.
