Hello,
I’m new here and look forward to your answers. I have used the search function but couldn’t find anything regarding my specific issue.
My goal: I want to store my CDs and DVDs in a shelving unit with drawers so that they don’t visually disrupt the living room but remain easily accessible. When pulling out the drawers, the labels on the cases should be readable.
What I already have: a Besta shelving unit with a height of 64cm (25 inches) and three Inreda drawers with built-in semi-transparent fronts, as well as CD and DVD mats.
My story: I was at IKEA and originally wanted the new Inreda drawers without built-in fronts for the Besta unit. According to the advisor, these had the right height to store CDs and DVDs. Unfortunately, I realized in the store that the height of the drawers was not sufficient to store CDs and DVDs (at least not in the bottom or top drawer). Then I saw the Inreda drawers with built-in fronts, which I didn’t like aesthetically. Now the strange part: I saw exactly my Besta unit there with four of those drawers installed. I bought three because there were no more available. At home, however, I noticed some problems even with these drawers:
1. You cannot use the full drawer depth if you don’t leave a gap, but not leaving a gap looks really bad.
2. I don’t understand how you can fit four of these drawers into a 64cm (25 inches) high Besta unit, and if you do, you lose height for the DVDs.
Apart from that, the width of the Besta shelving is not necessarily ideal for DVDs. Also, Blu-ray movie cases have different dimensions again…
My questions:
1) What was IKEA’s idea behind this? What is the concept?
2) What would be the best solution for me?
3) Can I solve the issue somehow with the drawers without the built-in front? I would be happy with three drawers that are fully usable for DVDs, please.

Maverick18542 Sep 2010 09:24IKEA Concept:
Besta with doors = CD and DVD storage. Besta with Inreda drawers = no CD or DVD storage.
Only another series helps here. For example: Expedit with drawers, but I think it doesn’t fit many CDs and DVDs.
Otherwise, Billy or Benno work quite well, but they are only available with doors.
Or you build something yourself...

Maverick18544 Sep 2010 07:43How can CDs be stored conveniently behind a door?Only if they are placed one behind the other. Then they cannot be pulled out, so using a CD mat.
Besta is not designed as a complete CD-DVD shelf like that. Benno or Billy are better suited for that purpose.
I can’t really help you there either, since Besta is not my area of expertise.
