Hey everyone,

I’m moving into a small studio apartment soon and want to make the most of every available space. I’m bringing my 220x200 cm (87x79 inches) Malm bed with me and am thinking about how to raise it higher to create some storage underneath. I haven’t found anything suitable in the IKEA range to help with this.

I was considering using two long wooden beams to support it, but I’m not sure if that would be stable enough.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Best regards,
Tom

Good morning,

We had the opposite situation—we had to shorten the headboard by 5 cm (2 inches). From that experience, I can tell you that the old beds had relatively hollow headboards because the inside was made of a wooden woven mat in a wave pattern. You can clearly feel this if you lift just the headboard. It weighs almost nothing.

Personally, I wouldn’t support the headboard and footboard each on a single beam. Depending on how you sleep or get in and out of bed, the bed will wobble a bit. So you would need to fix the beams—but where? Instead, I would use wider beams and have grooves milled into them, where the headboard and footboard can then be recessed.

Hello Tom!

Personally, I wouldn’t recommend modifying the bed frame. Instead, I would suggest building a platform for the bed. This way, you could create great storage space underneath, and the bed would still remain stable.

Just my 2 cents
