Häuserträume18 Mar 2023 22:45Hello everyone!
We need your help. We are currently renovating an old building. Below, I have attached photos of our future living room. Although the room is quite large (33 m² (355 sq ft)), we’re struggling with ideas on how to furnish it. What we do know is that we want a sufficiently large sofa, a television, and a piano, which should be placed against an interior wall. On the right side of the sliding patio door, there will probably be a wood stove. Ideally, the sofa should be positioned in the right corner, as we don’t want every delivery person standing at the front door to see us lounging on the couch. We would really appreciate your suggestions! Thanks so much and best regards!

Häuserträume19 Mar 2023 18:40Does anyone have an idea? We’ve already thought about it a bit and came up with the following suggestion. However, I’m unsure because you always have the sofa right in front of you when walking from the dining room into the living room… I’m not really happy with that arrangement, but how else could we do it? By the way, we haven’t bought any furniture yet, so we are still completely free in the layout. Please help us – we appreciate any suggestions…

I can somehow imagine it like this (furniture is not to scale). You would have to experiment to see if it works somehow.
In general, I find the room quite difficult to furnish. Many windows, many openings, and yet very large. The sofa would probably need to be positioned somewhere in the room, not against a wall.
In my idea, there is a kind of cabinet or wall unit on the left, and a TV on a low stand or something similar in front of the sofa on the right.

Yes, we also found it difficult to plan the room from the beginning… but everything was already predetermined because it is an existing building. The downside of your suggestion might be that if you stand at the front of the hallway, you would be looking at the side of the TV… and have the stove behind your back… hmm… that’s so tricky!

Yes, we also found it difficult to plan the room from the start… but everything was already fixed since it’s an existing property. Maybe the downside of your idea is that when standing in the hallway at the front, you would be looking toward the side of the TV… and have your back to the stove… hmm… that’s tricky! That’s right, I hadn’t thought about the stove anymore. You usually want to be able to see it rather than have it behind you. Maybe the idea could be turned 180 degrees, depending on which sofa layout and size you choose.
Are you familiar with Sweet Home 3D? It’s a fairly simple planning software. You can enter the room dimensions, place windows, then add a few pieces of furniture and the stove to experiment with different arrangements.

Viewed from the entrance (hallway):
Place the piano against the left wall; it creates a nice focal point from the hallway and people don’t linger there as long as on the sofa, so it won’t feel uncomfortable. Also, the walkway should remain clear since you have a small door in the corner at the back.
I would position the sofa in the room with its back to the piano. Normally, I would prefer the corner next to the sliding door to the kitchen, but that doesn’t work with the large window and TV setup. So, a long sofa, possibly with an ottoman for the feet. In front of it, the coffee table. A view of the stove and TV, and sideways out to the large window, overlooking the garden. A bit in front of the sliding door, place two cozy, not too tall armchairs with a small table between them. Nice view from there, a good spot for guests. Two armchairs don’t create as much of a block as a sofa would, as the entrance in front of the sliding door shouldn’t be blocked.
The TV can then go on the wall or on a TV stand, depending on taste.
I would recommend a rug under the sofa/armchairs/coffee table to define and anchor that area from the rest of the room.
And somewhere add a tall cabinet or a tall shelving unit so the room doesn’t feel too shallow.
Cozy lighting through table and floor lamps etc., and you’re done.
