Hello,
I’m not sure if this exists. The question is, what are your ideas? How high should a knee wall be at minimum? We are currently planning with a 1m (3.3 ft) knee wall and a 45-degree gable roof. Of course, I can raise it, but it’s always a matter of cost. How high should the knee wall be nowadays so that the rooms on the upper floor can be used effectively?

Thanks in advance for your tips.

We have now requested a quote from the builder and they specified the knee wall height as 1 meter (3.3 feet). The question is what they would charge to increase the knee wall to, for example, 1.50 meters (5 feet). Builders have you in a tough spot with this, as they charge quite a bit for such modifications. Just raising the basement ceiling height by 10 cm (4 inches) from 2.20 to 2.30 meters (7.2 to 7.5 feet) costs 1,200 €, so I’m curious how much the knee wall increase will cost.

A small tip: don’t raise the height in neat 10 or 20 cm (4 or 8 inch) increments, but rather to match the height of a full masonry unit if possible. Sometimes a full brick or block can be more cost-effective than a cut half brick.

I don’t find that particularly expensive.

Well, if I convert it to 50cm (20 inches) for the upper floor, that would be over 5000 € more just like that. Just a quick question: What is the recommended height for a basement with living space? At least 2.40 m (7 ft 10 in), right?

Yes. However, I would generally recommend the standard clear height of 2.50 m (8 ft 2 in).

... which can get quite expensive with a basement using formwork panels, since there is no standard size.

That’s why we now have a clear height from the top edge of the finished floor of 2.36m (7 ft 9 in) in the basement, and this is more than enough for a living space underground.

At least as long as you don’t have a living room down there.

What exactly is meant by clear height? Is it the height from the screed to the ceiling?
