Hi,

As soon as it gets warmer outside, those annoying flies show up again (house flies or blow flies, not sure). Having one or two isn’t a big deal, but when you enter the living room and see around 20 small ones (they seem quite young) flying wildly around eye level in one spot like a whirlpool, it’s neither nice nor comfortable.

With the fly swatter, I managed to catch almost 20 of them... and there was one big bumblebee-like one flying around in the living room as well.

We had the same problem in the kids’ room, though there it was only about 10 flies.

I just wonder where they come from? We don’t keep any door open for long (no sliding door or patio door left open for hours), no window is constantly open for ventilation, no trash lying around, no food leftovers, and so on...

At first, I suspected the cats’ food bowls in the utility room, but they only get wet food when the cats are there, and they eat everything right away, so you would notice any laid larvae there…

Does anyone have tips on how to deal with this? I don’t want to spray anything or keep smashing flies all over the walls and windows with the swatter…

I find it strange because I didn’t have this problem in the old apartment.

I can’t help you much.

Our old apartment was about 30 meters (100 feet) in a straight line from a vineyard. Even though we lived on the top floor of the building, we regularly had fruit flies visiting. It was quite annoying. Take a look at the surroundings – it won’t solve your problem, but maybe it’s reassuring to understand where these pests come from.

Otherwise, I recommend having fixed insect screens installed in your windows. I mean not those basic nets with adhesive tape that come off after a couple of months and let the insects back in, but built-in frames. For the patio door, a sliding insect screen door might help. We did this in our house (in fact, we also installed insect protection roller blinds) and mostly have peace from the little crawlies.

Good luck with your hunt.

Hello,
try asking your neighbors if they have the same issue. I initially thought it was coming from inside the house, but it turned out that everyone here experiences it. Only sturdy fly screens helped.

At a large discount retailer that divided its territory into north and south sections, there were some aluminum-framed ones available for a low price in the southern part a few weeks ago. Some stores still seem to have some in stock.

We had a similar problem last summer and tried several solutions (including the usual home remedies). I documented everything on our construction blog (which method we used and what results it brought).

The most effective were fly traps for the window—small adhesive strips with bait that you can stick to the window frames (they are also very discreet and last a long time).

Hello

same here. We have old natural areas nearby. We decided not to use traps or similar measures. So far, this year has been less intense than the last.
