ᐅ HPL facade panels show dents in the center and around the screw holes.

Hello dear building experts,

For the facade cladding, we have chosen large-format, anthracite-colored HPL panels.
Part of it has already been installed, see photos.
The substructure is made of wood.
At first glance, it is clear that the facade does not have the smooth appearance we expected and have seen in photos of similar claddings.

The initial response from the contractor was basically "it can’t be done any other way" – which we do not want to accept.
A handover has, of course, not yet taken place.

Does anyone know this issue?
How could these dents have occurred?
How can the damage be repaired or prevented in a reinstallation?

I look forward to your insights!

Best regards,
Janine

In our case, the Trespa panels are screwed every 50 to 60 cm (20 to 24 inches) horizontally and vertically, and they don’t warp at all. Our panels are 8 mm (5/16 inch) thick. The spacing on your pictures looks much wider to me—are they even screwed in the middle? Normally, there shouldn’t be any denting right at the screw because the panels are very hard.

I really should measure the spacing during my lunch break. And yes, they are screwed in the middle, but only vertically. That’s where some of the panels developed those indentations... The panels are very hard, so I could imagine our assumption that the drilling was done at too high a temperature. Plastic and heat are not the best combination.

I suspect that the holes are too small, preventing the panels from expanding or contracting properly. Additionally, they are screwed in too tightly...

Cause: rough-sawn substructure and/or excessive torque when screwing in.

Good luck with the defect complaint.

It’s always frustrating how much the tradespeople sometimes underestimate your knowledge and try to convince you of all sorts of things 🙄
