Hello everyone, I am planning to assemble several Ikea Platsa modules side by side and wonder how wide I can build the Platsa shelves at most without compromising stability and functionality. Specifically, I am interested in whether Ikea sets a maximum limit for such configurations, and if not, what practical limits (e.g., wall fixing, cantilever, load capacity) should be considered. I want to ensure my shelving unit does not become unstable, wobble, or sag, especially since I plan to place several modules at floor-to-ceiling height. Are there any experiences regarding whether it is possible to combine 3, 4, or more modules side by side without issues? Thanks for your insights!

Hello Pin46, your question is very well formulated because it addresses both the official maximum width and practical experience. Basically, Ikea does not specify fixed maximum widths for Platsa combinations, since the modules stand individually and are mainly stabilized by screwing them together. However, I can give you a few tips from my long-term experience:

- Wall mounting is crucial, especially for taller or wider units.
- The wider the combination, the more you should consider additional intermediate reinforcement (e.g., extra screws or corner brackets).
- The weight of the contents and whether you plan to include large doors, drawers, or open shelves also play a role.

I have personally placed up to 5 modules side by side without any issues; with wall anchors, they hold very well. You can avoid wobbling by aligning the modules precisely and securing them against slipping. Hope this helps!

Maximum width depends on wall mounting and weight. Without wall mounting, stability is low. Three modules side by side are usually fine; more than that must be secured properly.

That’s really important! Floor-to-ceiling furniture can get quite heavy when fully loaded. My advice: definitely use the included wall fixings, and if you want to add some visual lightness, place smaller shelves or tall plants next to it – that also helps stabilize the structure.

And don’t worry about putting more than three units side by side; as long as you secure them properly, it’s absolutely not a problem.

Hello Pin46, to elaborate a bit more on your question: Ikea Platsa modules typically measure 60 cm (24 inches) in width each. In theory, you can place as many side by side as your room and wall allow. However, as the width increases, the risk of tipping and instability also rises.

Therefore, it is advisable to use wall mounting starting from three modules. If you want to combine more than four modules, it can also be useful to add extra support legs or reinforcements between the modules for increased stability.

You should also pay attention to weight: it’s better to store heavy items at the bottom to keep the center of gravity low.

Briefly on stability: I would not recommend placing more than 3 modules side by side without wall mounting. Wall attachment is essential and significantly stabilizes the entire structure. Otherwise, the shelf could tip over or the individual parts may shift.
