Hello everyone,
I have a small issue with my IKEA Brimnes bed that I would like to repair before the damage gets worse. Specifically, there are minor scratches and surface blemishes on the wood surfaces, most likely caused by bumps or small scrapes during rearranging. Since BRIMNES furniture is usually coated with a melamine finish, I’m a bit unsure how to repair the damage as inconspicuously as possible without affecting the surface.
My question is: What is the best way to fix minor damage on IKEA BRIMNES furniture? Are there any special tips for working with melamine surfaces or MDF with a laminate finish, so that entire parts don’t have to be replaced? Which materials and techniques do you use to reliably and durably repair small scratches or dents while keeping the furniture looking good?
I’m looking forward to practical, preferably step-by-step solutions and experience reports from you. Thanks in advance!

Hello moalf,
Your question is right in my area of expertise, as I often repair IKEA furniture and frequently work with melamine surfaces like those on BRIMNES. Here is a brief, structured guide on how to repair minor scratches or dents on melamine surfaces:
- Clean the damaged area thoroughly with a mild all-purpose cleaner and a soft cloth to remove any dirt or grease.
- For small scratches, you can use repair markers (furniture touch-up pens) in matching colors. Carefully fill the scratches with the marker and gently wipe off any excess color afterward.
- For slightly larger dents, high-quality repair wax or furniture wax sticks work well. These can be worked into the dent and then polished smooth.
- Make sure to choose color tones that match the original melamine exactly; for IKEA BRIMNES, this is usually light white or wood finishes.
- Very deep damage can sometimes be gently roughened with fine sandpaper (grit 800–1000) and then treated with fillers, but this requires some practice since the melamine should not be damaged too much.
Summary: There is no magical method for melamine surfaces, but repair markers and waxes are the simplest solutions. If you proceed step by step and test color tones, you should achieve very good results.
If you have questions about any of the steps, just let me know!

For small scratches, you can use so-called repair pens (furniture touch-up markers) in matching colors.Absolutely right! I recently did the same on my BRIMNES wardrobe and have to say: it looks almost like new afterward. Just be patient when working with it and apply in thin layers.
Here’s another tip: if you carefully wipe the damaged area beforehand with some household vinegar, you remove invisible dust and grease, which improves the durability of the repair.
Otherwise: no big deal, these small marks just come with typical furniture use, and with a little patience, you can fix almost anything. 😉

Are there any special tips for working with melamine surfaces or MDF with laminate without having to replace entire parts?I understand how you feel when you discover damage on your furniture and wonder if you just have to accept it. I had similar scratches on my BRIMNES desk that really bothered me. What helped me was:
- Stay calm and take a close look at how deep the scratches are.
- I covered small dents with furniture wax I bought at a hardware store.
- It’s important not to overwork the surface afterward, as this can make things worse.
The repair is visible on close inspection, but for me, it was more about feeling better about the living room. If you’re careful, the piece still looks nice and the damage is less noticeable.
If it doesn’t turn out perfect, that’s okay too. Furniture is meant to be used.
