ᐅ How to plaster a wall made of concrete form blocks—any experiences?

Hello everyone,

Last year, I built a wall using formwork blocks. Now it’s time to plaster it. I have never done this before and am hoping to receive plenty of experience, tips, and ideas.

My plan was to first use mortar to even out the “irregularities,” then clean the surface, apply a primer and let it dry well. Next, I want to apply the base coat (scratch coat), let it dry again, smooth it out, then apply the finish coat (top coat), and finally place coping stones on top of the wall.

What do you think of this approach? Do you have any advice on which products would be best for this? I am particularly struggling with choosing the right coping stones and finish coat. Perhaps someone has some ideas or even alternatives for me.

Attached are two pictures of the wall, which is 22 m (72 feet) long and 75 cm (30 inches) high.

Thanks a lot Best regards

Good morning,

are there any new findings regarding durability?
I also built a retaining wall in my garden and would like to improve its appearance. My plan is to clean the wall, then apply reinforcement mesh. After that, either plaster or apply a textured finish.
The bottom layer still has a bitumen coating on it. Does that need to be removed, or can I apply reinforcement mortar and mesh over it?

The question is, how long will it last?
There are some people around who advise against doing this.

I believe that if a formwork wall is built "properly," meaning with a frost-proof foundation, drainage, waterproof slurry, etc., then the plaster will also last a long time. The wall simply must not absorb moisture.

Yes, all of that should be in place. The interior is locked, drainage has been installed, and the foundation is frost-protected.

On my shuttering block wall, I applied a first layer of reinforcing mesh with bonding mortar, which also serves as a base coat about 1cm (0.4 inches) thick. Smoothed nicely, it already looks quite good. Eventually, a Munich-style roughcast plaster will be applied as the top coat.
Exactly! Of course, any other top coat plaster can be used as well.

Hello everyone, I am also planning to improve the appearance of our concrete block wall. At the moment, I am considering applying a base coat plaster and then either covering the walls with tiles or cladding. Has anyone done something like this before?
Does anyone have an alternative example where the wall is simply plastered and painted?
Thanks and best regards

Hi, I covered a garden wall with cladding panels. Rendering wasn’t an option for me because I didn’t feel confident doing it myself. I’m more than happy with the cladding. Unfortunately, I only have two old pictures at the moment. I can take a current photo if anyone wants.
Garden view: mossy stone wall, soil and gravel ground with scattered apples.

Garden with dark stone wall, two trees in front, loose tile stacks on the wall.
