HubiTrubi403 Jan 2023 12:17Hello everyone,
About a year after moving into our new house, we are now looking to buy a new sofa. We currently have an Ikea sofa, which will be moved to the basement.
We would like a U-shaped or L-shaped sofa and have already visited several furniture stores. Our budget is a maximum of 4000 euros, which is probably not much for such a sofa, but you can still find something decent for that price. Most furniture stores offer similar options, mostly from Polish manufacturers. I think that’s okay. Online reviews are often mixed, but these furniture stores are not self-service outlets, so I hope they sell quality products.
Our problem is the room layout. I have attached a sketch. The issue is that one side of the U or L sofa would be along the window wall, where the radiator is. I’m not sure how practical that is, as you shouldn’t cover a radiator. Then there’s the question of how much clearance it would need. We have now found a sofa with a chaise lounge on the window side, which would only cover a small part of the radiator, mainly the lower section, as it is not very tall.
The sofa would be 3 meters (10 feet) long along the wall. The wall itself is 4 meters (13 feet) to the chimney. If we decide to install a wood-burning stove in the future, space will be tight. The stove would have to be positioned slightly to the side.
Do you have any ideas if this setup could work? I roughly sketched the sofa in the plans (sorry for the clutter).

Hello Hubi!
Regarding the chimney or the future stove, I don’t have a precise assessment, but with a distance of 1 meter (3.3 feet), I don’t see a major issue.
As for the radiator, I don’t see any problem at all, since, as you mentioned yourself, only a small part will be covered. This sofa spot will probably become your favorite place, with a view outside and warm feet! 😉

Personally, I wouldn’t go for a fixed U-shaped arrangement because it limits other options… I’d rather extend a sofa with an ottoman. That way, you stay more flexible.

HubiTrubi4020 Jan 2023 11:19It will be an L-shaped sofa after all. We found a couch that will partially cover the heating radiator, as shown in the photo marked with tape. However, I don't think we will place the couch directly against the radiator.
