Hello everyone,

I have several Billy shelves from Ikea that have gotten some scratches over time. Now I’m wondering: What is the best way to repair scratches on Billy shelves so that they become as invisible as possible or at least much less noticeable?

I know the surface is usually either veneered or lacquered, so I want to avoid any risky methods that might damage the finish further. Are there practical approaches that have proven effective in everyday situations—perhaps using special products, home remedies, or small repair kits?

It would also be helpful to get tips on how to prepare the surface beforehand and how to treat it afterward to ensure the repair lasts as long as possible.

Looking forward to your experiences!

To add to the previous suggestions:

Repair kits for melamine-coated furniture are useful for superficial to medium-depth scratches. They often include a type of filler and coloring agents. Precise color matching is essential.

For deeper scratches or exposed particleboard, it may be advisable to replace the affected shelf section, as material properties and stability can be compromised with significant damage.

Alternatively, special repair markers or waxes offer a less involved immediate fix but are generally less durable.

The choice of method depends on the type of damage – surface defects are best repaired conservatively, while replacement is often more effective for deeper mechanical damage.

Hello Tufanbo, I would like to add:

If you try repair kits from the hardware store, make sure to read the product descriptions carefully. Some kits are more suited for veneer or wood and are not ideal for melamine-coated surfaces.

Another option is to use color-matched acrylic paint – this can effectively fill and conceal small cracks.

Also very effective: after the repair, apply a protective film or a transparent edge protector to reduce future scratches.

One more tip: sometimes a gentle polish with a plastic care product can improve the appearance.

Good tip! It is always advisable to reinforce the repaired area with an additional protective measure.

I also recommend doing small tests in inconspicuous spots beforehand, especially with paints and fillers.

One more note: For minor signs of wear, furniture care creams based on wax can significantly improve the appearance without much effort.

I recently had the exact same problem with my Billy shelf. My tip from personal experience:

Use a dark felt-tip pen (e.g., a permanent marker) for small black scratches – it surprisingly disguises them well if applied carefully.

For light scratches, I simply used some color-matched wax. Very easy, and the result looks better than before.

And yes, a coat of clear varnish on top makes the scratches almost invisible.

Of course, this isn’t a 100% professional repair, but for about 20 minutes of effort, it’s great! 🙂

Well, a touch-up pen or felt-tip marker is exactly the kind of quick fix I mean: nice and fast, but not a proper long-term solution. You shouldn’t pretend it’s a real repair.

But for people who don’t have the time or interest, it’s okay. As long as you’re not fooling yourself.

If you want, I can also provide more specific product names and mix ratios

That would be very helpful! Especially since I am not familiar with products like furniture waxes or fillers, recommendations for specific products and application tips would be greatly appreciated.

Also, any advice on what to definitely avoid—such as certain solvents or tools—would be great. Thanks in advance!
