Hello everyone,

After more than 3 years in our house, I unfortunately noticed that the shower drain in the main bathroom, a Geberit wall drain, is showing signs of slight blockage. The water is draining very slowly. I have been regularly cleaning the hair strainer.

Does anyone have an idea how to clean it? I have already got a drain snake, but I can hardly reach past the first two bends. It would also be helpful to have a cross-sectional diagram of the drain, as Geberit’s support wasn’t really helpful.

Thank you very much.

There is a drain cleaner (chemical) available at DM and similar stores.

I don’t believe in chemicals; they have never helped us. However, I swear by these air pressure pumps—they’re really brilliant. They do require that you can seal the device tightly onto the drain, like at a sink, bathtub, or toilet. I’m not sure what you mean by “wall drain.”

I’ll bring this topic back to life...

I’m specifically interested in this type of wall drain. Unfortunately, there isn’t much information about it online (I’m not quite sure why!?), but over the years the same issues have occasionally appeared on different websites—not very frequently, but considering that I haven’t really come across much positive feedback, the overall impression seems rather negative.

It could be that the drain is really problematic, or as is often the case, satisfied customers rarely share their positive experiences...

Has anyone gained experience with it by now? As I said, I’m quite keen on this drain...

Don't use it. I currently have it in my condominium, and it tends to clog easily and is difficult to clean thoroughly due to its depth. For me, it only really cleans properly with chemicals.
Additionally, the cover's fastening is very unstable.
I recommend the Cleanline floor drain.

Thank you for your response, even though it wasn’t exactly what I wanted to hear 😕 .

I find it quite interesting because you describe exactly the problem you sometimes come across online. We currently have the floor drain you mentioned and would really like to get rid of it (hopefully soon 🙂 ). Every two weeks, we have to remove the grate and clean the hair strainer because after only about a week and a half, the water no longer drains properly, and you end up standing in foam. Also, the grout around the tiles by the grate is looking increasingly unsightly, which is why I’ve been looking for an alternative.

During a vacation last year, we found what I consider the perfect solution at a hotel—the wall drain. It looked great, and the rushing stream created by the heavy rain shower drained away as if it flowed straight through the wall into a river without any narrowing. I was pretty impressed because I knew that if we had a showerhead like that at home, the entire bathroom would definitely be flooded.

Can you understand what might be causing the poor drainage in your case? Are there differences in how this type of drain is installed that could affect the drainage performance (I’m not familiar with this at all)? Could it be that Geberit has been selling faulty products for a long time, or wouldn’t the level of outrage be so high?
