Hello everyone, I am currently planning to buy an IKEA Malm desk but have often heard about issues with stability, workmanship, and the furniture panels. My question is: How can I specifically check when purchasing if my Malm piece is affected by common problems such as uneven finishing, crooked edges, boards that appear damaged or worn, or unstable connections? What should I pay attention to during an on-site inspection to avoid unpleasant surprises at home and unnecessary returns? Are there specific tests, practical tips, or visible indicators that should not be overlooked? Thanks for your advice!

Hey, a little motivation: When you test moving parts like drawers or doors, listen carefully! Squeaking or creaking sounds often indicate poor joints. And remember: Even if the dealer is nice today and offers to find you a better piece, it’s safer to look at several identical pieces. That way, you’re sure to find the best one 🙂

Thanks for all your tips! Tomorrow, I’ll try to compare several Malm desks directly at Ikea and will pay attention to edges, surface, stability, and drawers as recommended. I have one more question: Does anyone have experience with frequent differences in the assembly instructions or screws that could affect stability? That would be helpful, especially if the furniture seems solid in the store but wobbles after assembly.

IKEA furniture comes with standardized and well-documented assembly instructions and screws. However, incorrect assembly or missing screws can affect stability. It is important to check all screw holes for damage before starting the assembly and to follow the assembly sequence carefully. If screws or fittings are missing, report it immediately.

I am not aware of any systematic discrepancies. However, there can occasionally be minor errors in accessories or printed instructions in individual batches. Therefore, I recommend conducting a completeness check of all parts shortly before assembly.

So far, I haven't experienced any missing screws, but one step in the instructions regarding the connections was not entirely clear. Just make sure all fasteners are tightly secured, and everything will be fine.

Whether assembly instructions and screws affect stability
I had a similar situation where a small screw was missing – it caused significant wobbling. So, it’s definitely worth checking everything thoroughly before starting the assembly. YouTube videos for the build can also be helpful to avoid mistakes.
