Hello everyone,

I want to build a staircase on an existing slope in our garden.

The slope is about 2.9 m (9.5 ft) deep, approximately 3.1 m (10 ft) long, and from the lowest to the highest point it is around 1.2 m (4 ft). I hope all these dimensions are clear!?

I still have some lawn edging from the hardware store left over, which I want to use as steps. Since this staircase will mainly be used by my daughter, these edging stones with dimensions of about 24 cm x 10 cm (or 30 cm, as I want to lay three side by side) x 4.5 cm (9.5 in x 4 in (12 in)) should be sufficient as treads.

My problem is this: what is the best approach? I have never built a staircase before and don’t know where to start with the first step, how many steps I will need, or what the right spacing should be.

Maybe someone here has one or two good tips for me.

Take a look at how stairs are built on forest trails. You could use the stones as risers, with the treads in between simply being compacted soil.

The ideal comfortable rise-run ratio is considered to be 63 cm (25 inches), which is the sum of one tread depth plus two riser heights. For example, in a residential staircase, this might be about 19 cm (7.5 inches) high and 26 cm (10 inches) deep.

You have a slope of approximately 22° on the hillside (120 cm (47 inches) height over 290 cm (114 inches) length). In this ratio, the 63 cm (25 inches) would translate to 14 cm (5.5 inches) rise and 35 cm (14 inches) run, resulting in about eight and a half steps.

So you could build, for example, eight steps at 15 cm (6 inches) rise and 37.5 cm (15 inches) run, or nine steps at 13.3 cm (5.25 inches) rise and 33.3 cm (13 inches) run. Alternatively, you can optimize the rise-run ratio a bit and create a ramp before or after the stairs to cover the height difference. For instance, with eight steps at 15 cm (6 inches) rise and 33 cm (13 inches) run, the elevation change would be overcome after 2.31 m (7.6 feet) in length, without any leftover height difference—this could be managed by slightly adjusting the length at the bottom or adding fill at the top.
