ᐅ How tightly do IKEA PLATSA doors close compared to other furniture?

SUSONHello everyone,
I recently looked more closely into IKEA’s cabinet solutions and came across the PLATSA system. I’m particularly interested in how well the doors seal on PLATSA compared to other IKEA furniture or products from other manufacturers.
Background: I plan to use PLATSA in a room with higher humidity (for example, near a bathroom) and want to avoid uncontrolled moisture entering through gaps in the doors. At the same time, I want to ensure that dust and odors do not easily get inside.
I am interested in:
- How well do the doors of PLATSA actually close? Are they as tightly sealed as other IKEA systems like PAX or BESTÅ?
- Are there any specific features in PLATSA’s sealing or closing mechanism to be aware of?
- Do you have practical experience with whether the doors close flush or if small gaps are usually visible?
I look forward to your detailed assessments, including comparisons with other furniture you know. Tips for improvements are also welcome.
Thank you very much in advance!

Regarding the airtightness of IKEA PLATSA doors: These doors come standard with magnetic catches that ensure a secure closure. However, they lack real rubber seals or gasketing strips like those found on high-quality kitchen cabinets.
Compared to PAX, which also uses magnetic locks, the gap on PLATSA doors is slightly larger, increasing air and thus moisture permeability. This system is designed more for modular storage solutions without specific airtightness requirements.
My advice:
- If you want the doors to be truly airtight, you can add sealing strips yourself.
- For rooms with high humidity, plastic or metal furniture with explicit sealing is more suitable.
Summary: PLATSA closes reliably but is not airtight in the technical sense.

However, it lacks a real rubber seal or sealing lips, like those found on high-quality kitchen cabinets. That sums it up well! I like PLATSA because it’s flexible and easy to handle, but if you’re really looking for something that seals tightly, it’s more like an open window in the wind—cozy, but not 100% insulated 😅.
I tried upgrading it myself with self-adhesive seals—it worked, but the look suffered a little. Still better than letting in potential moisture.
In short: It’s fine for dust and everyday use, but you might want a bit of extra protection against moisture 😉.

My background: I am planning to use PLATSA in a room with increased humidity (e.g., near a bathroom) and want to avoid uncontrolled moisture entering through leaking doors. This is an important point. From my own experience:
- The doors of PLATSA close properly but have small visible gaps along the edges.
- These very gaps allow moisture and slight odors to escape or enter.
- I had a similar project and added narrow sealing strips to the doors, which helped noticeably.
It is also important to consider the material of the back panels and shelves. PLATSA uses particleboard, which is not optimal for moisture resistance.
If you are aiming for long-term protection against moisture, additional sealing or a different type of cabinet would be advisable.
Question for everyone: Does anyone have experience with the plastic doors of PLATSA—do they close better than the wooden doors?
