Hello everyone,

I am currently considering outfitting my new wardrobe with the IKEA PLATSA system. Since I place great importance on adaptability and storage space, I am wondering: How suitable is IKEA PLATSA as a wardrobe in terms of stability, functionality, and customization?

I would like to know if the system works well for different types of clothing (jackets, coats, shoes), how durable it really is in everyday use, and whether the assembly is manageable for non-professionals.

Additionally, I am interested in user experiences with the various shelves and hanging options, and whether the system is a long-term solution or better suited for temporary use.

Looking forward to your detailed assessments!

I have PLATSA installed as a wardrobe in the hallway. The stability is solid as long as you don’t exceed the height and securely fix the cabinet to the wall. The shelves and clothes rods can be positioned flexibly, and it works well for jackets and shoes. Assembly is typical IKEA, with clear instructions.

Hey Corneliama, I’m using PLATSA as a wardrobe solution and honestly, I’m quite happy with it! ✨ The key is the flexibility: you can build the modules exactly the way you need them.

However, I would recommend not stacking them too high, as it can become unstable. The stability is okay, but it’s not meant to hold very heavy loads. Assembly went well for me with a bit of fun (and a beer) – that makes it easier 😄.

Shoes fit nicely at the bottom, and jackets hang easily in the middle. Overall, it’s a nice, affordable concept that’s made more for living with than just looking at.

A detailed evaluation is necessary to assess IKEA PLATSA as a wardrobe:

- Stability: The system is designed for modular customization, but the construction of tall, narrow units without wall anchoring is prone to tipping stability issues.
- Functionality: The available shelves, rods, and accessories offer solid options for storing jackets and shoes, but the load capacity of the shelves should be considered.
- Customization: PLATSA stands out with flexible units that can be adapted to room size and user needs.
- Assembly: The instructions are clear for users without craftsmanship experience, but careful attention and time are required during installation.

Conclusion: PLATSA is suitable as a medium- to long-term solution if wall anchoring is implemented and the maximum recommended dimensions are observed.

Thanks for the information. I’m also curious whether you chose glass or wood for the shelves? How sturdy do they seem with daily use, especially when heavier shoes or bags are placed on them?

Stability is okay, but these aren’t heavy-duty cabinets.

That’s important for me. Are there any practical experiences about at what height stability becomes critical?

If wall mounting is done and the maximum recommended dimensions are followed.

How mandatory is the wall mounting? Could the units also be used flexibly in an open walkway without a wall? Or is that definitely not advisable?

Wall anchoring is recommended for PLATSA to ensure stability, especially for tall cabinet combinations or when the cabinet is used freestanding as a room divider. Without anchoring, the risk of tipping cannot be ruled out, which poses a safety hazard.

For shelf material, I recommend wood-based panels because they offer higher load capacity than glass shelves. These are more durable for shoes and bags, particularly with regular use. Additionally, wood panels are easier to clean and have a longer lifespan.
