Hello everyone,

I am currently considering getting an Ikea Brimnes wardrobe, but I am a bit uncertain about its durability with frequent use. Specifically, I am interested in how sturdy the piece of furniture is in everyday life when it is regularly opened and closed, possibly storing somewhat heavier items inside, and used under normal conditions by two to three people.

Since the construction is made of particleboard and relatively thin fasteners, I have concerns about how long such a wardrobe will remain stable without the hinges loosening or the material wearing out over time.

Does anyone here have experience with the Brimnes wardrobe under frequent use? Are there any specific weak points I should watch out for, or any tips for maintenance and use to extend its lifespan?

I look forward to your feedback and suggestions, as I would like to use this piece of furniture for a long time.

I can relate to that, as I was quite unsure myself whether the Brimnes would hold up in everyday use. Here’s my experience: The stability is actually quite good for the price, but you shouldn’t expect it to be a solid wood piece that lasts forever.

After two years of use, the material loosened a bit, and the doors didn’t align perfectly as easily anymore. The hinges are basically sturdy, but if you use it a lot, it’s a good idea to check them occasionally and tighten them if needed.

The most important thing, in my opinion, is not to overload the cabinet – even though the shelves are large, the boards aren’t very thick. Especially with heavier items, you can notice it starting to bend slightly.

So, I’d say the Brimnes is sturdy enough for normal use, but with heavy use and load, you should expect some minor maintenance. Overall, I am satisfied because it serves its purpose well and offers good value for the price.

Hello Umutron,

to comprehensively answer your question about the stability of the Ikea Brimnes wardrobe with frequent use, I would like to address some technical details and potential weak points I have observed during my experience with this piece of furniture.

The wardrobe is constructed from particleboard panels with a thin melamine coating. The connecting elements typically consist of metal nails, screws, and dowels inserted into pre-drilled holes.

Important: The clamping force in these connections plays a major role in the overall stability. This loosens over time, especially with frequent opening and closing, as dynamic loads act on the fixing points. This can lead to some movement of the components for certain users.

A key factor is correct initial assembly. If the screws are not tightened sufficiently during construction, imbalances can quickly occur, which reduce the lifespan. A second tightening round after a few weeks often results in a noticeable improvement in stability.

It is also advisable to avoid overloading the wardrobe, especially in the upper compartments, as this can cause the particleboard to bend or the connectors to loosen.

As a private individual, I recommend:
- Regular inspection and tightening of screws, especially the hinges.
- Avoidance of point loads and overloading.
- Use of additional wall fixings to improve stability.

I would be interested to know more about how exactly you use the wardrobe. Do you move furniture frequently? Is the wardrobe placed against a wall that must withstand movement? How heavy are the stored items? These factors strongly influence how long the furniture remains stable.

You nailed it!

I really like the Brimnes because it offers a lot of space and is fairly quick to assemble. But I agree: if you put it through a real-life stress test, it’s likely to start showing signs of wear over time.

I would add:
- Of course, check the screws twice a year; that already helps a lot.
- Avoid children playing on the surface (it’s a stress test for the board!).
- And please don’t lean on the doors, not even briefly when putting on shoes.

This might sound a bit strict, but hey, it’s not a designer piece made of solid wood. For the price, you get more flexibility in how you handle it.

Good luck with your decision! 😊
