Hello everyone,

I am currently looking into the stability of the IKEA Pax drawers, especially under load. I am particularly interested in how much weight the drawers can handle when filled with heavy items such as clothing, tools, or books. How durable are the drawer slides and the materials used? Are there any weak points to watch out for, for example concerning the drawer runners or the load capacity of individual drawer levels?

I would like to estimate the maximum load capacity without the drawers warping, jamming, or getting damaged. Does anyone have practical experience beyond the manufacturer’s specifications? I look forward to detailed feedback, ideally including long-term use under load. Thanks in advance!

The Pax drawers are generally sturdy but cannot support extremely heavy loads. I recommend limiting the weight to no more than 15 kilograms (33 pounds) per drawer. The slides are durable enough, but the mechanism wears out quickly if overloaded.

I understand your concern, Gregorylis. I personally loaded my Pax drawers with some heavy books and tools, and after about two years, there were no deformations, but the slides no longer operated completely smoothly. Sometimes you feel unsure whether the piece of furniture can really support the load permanently – I would always recommend being cautious and not overloading. I am also interested in how others assess the long-term performance.

Gregorylis, I would like to clarify your original question a bit: There is a clear maximum load capacity specified by the manufacturer, but this says little about real long-term use and possible wear and tear.

I consider exactly such experiences to be important. I would also be interested to know if there are differences between various drawer types in the Pax system—for example, metal frame versus wooden fronts—and how these affect stability.

The point is: without long-term experience under load, manufacturer specifications are often difficult to verify. Who frequently uses their drawers heavily and has long-term data?

Thanks for the responses so far.

Let me summarize and try to be more specific:

- Manufacturers specify a maximum of 13-15 kg (29-33 lbs) per drawer, but how realistic is this for regular use and possible lateral loads?
- Are there any practical experiences regarding wear and tear of the drawer slides under heavy loads?
- Is the system prone to misalignment or warping when subjected to high weights?

I am particularly interested in whether additional measures (reinforcements, different rails) can significantly improve stability or if the system has inherent structural limits.

I would appreciate insights beyond the official product information.

I have been using the Pax drawers for about 3 years, filled with clothes and some heavy files. The slides hold up well, and I haven’t noticed any deformation. However, I make sure not to put very heavy items inside. I have not made any reinforcements, but when opening them, you can feel a bit of play, although it is hardly noticeable.
